Default HoI2: TRP - Czechoslovakia AAR

Since I haven't made a new thread since the forum upgrade, I thought myself obliged to find some excuse to start one

I hereby present you with my rather tragic Czechoslovakia AAR in Hearts of Iron 2 with the Total Realism Project mod (And please excuse the quality of the images, damned Fraps):

Czechoslovakia - 1936

Czechoslovakia starts in a pretty decent position that gets incredibly worse over time. At the start of the game, Czechoslovakia is in an alliance with Rumania and Yugoslavia (the Little Entente) and has a nice amount of Industrial Capacity, having inherited most of the Austro-Hungarian industrial base.

I'll spare you the complete details first couple of years, which are quite boring. Most of the slider ticks went to Intervantionism (I probably should have ticked the Authoritarianism slider, but I wanted to remain to remain a Democracy for roleplaying's sake). Most of the research went to industry, infantry and tank brigades (You are not allowed to build tank divisions until Germany is a few months at war in the mod, which I hate) and most of the money was wasted on shady plots like trying to infiltrate Hungary with spies and manipulating global opinion of them to try to let me start a war earlier in order to improve my positio...err, I mean, to free the people of Hungary from their totalitarian regime!

Fast Forward to 1938

Due to rather bad luck, nothing especially important happened until 1938, at which point I had to shelve the planned invasion of Hungary due to the accursed Anschluss, which gave me a front too large to defend in case of German intervention.

Soon thereafter, the Sudetenland question arrises. Germany starts redeploying more and more troops to the border...

...all until the inevitable happens, the Allies sell Czechoslovakia to the Germans in exchange for peace, and Germany demends the cessesion of the Sudetenland.

Of course, one must do whathever he can to preserve the peace, so maybe I should just...

NE!

September 30th, 1938 - WAR!

Germany doesn't like having their demends refused, and opt to declare war on Czechoslovakia, and soon thereafter also declare war on Poland, causing the Western Allies to come into the war (Yeah, thanks, like that helped any...).

At this point, Czechoslovakia has 31 infantry and cavalry divisions defending Czechia with Slovakia left mostly undefended as I considered it undefendable (And a good place to get my divisions cut off and destroyed, no thanks), The number of German divisions on the other side of the border is somewhat ambiguous due to the lack of proper decoding technology, but is assumed to be roughly equal or slightly greater in number to the Czechoslovakian forces and much better equipped (Tank divisions! BAH!) and trained.

The German offensive starts with a flanking of the very strong border fortifications in the Sudetenland, quickly entering Slovakia with numerous divisions. A counterattack along Hollabrunn briefly traps the German army in Slovakia, but the Germans soon break through and rescue their trapped forces.

Despite success at the beginning, the German offensive stalls in the beginning of winter as they run out of easy prey in the face of massive fortifications.

Spring, 1939

The flowers blossom as panzer divisions once more roll over the frontlines, the German begin their second offensive at Kutná Hora, which is unfortified but defended by many dug-in defenders and several reserves thrown in, a battle which will prove long and bloody for both sides.

Meanwhile, the war escalates, the Soviet Union declares war on Germany!

Germany quickly turns to it's friends in the Balkans, and one by one, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Greece joins it against the Soviet Union.

By this point the Czechoslovak army is reduced to 22 divisions, but the First Battle of Kutná Hora rages on for a month more, at which point the Germans are forced to break off the attack and retreat in the face of counterattacks, having suffered their first major defeat.

The Germans cease their offensive to regroup and reorganize, something which the Czechoslovak defenders are unable to do effeciently due to incessent aerial interdiction and bombing, the Germans also recieve reinforcements from other fronts and their new allies.

Soon after, the Germans launch their third offensive, the Second Battle of Kutná Hora opens as the Czechoslovak army, now disorganized low on reinforcements, are forced to defend against Axis forces outnumbering them 2:1.

The world applauds the Czechoslovak army as it holds the German attack for 2 more weeks, but their applauds cannot avert the helpless situation, the Kutná Hora line is overrun and Prague soon falls to the German tanks, the remnants of the Czechoslovak army falls back to Plzeň in order to make a last stand

Last Stand

The remains of the Czechoslovak army, numbering 22 understrength and disorganized divisions, now stands in Plzeň, completely surrounded and faced with approximately 50 German, Hungarian and Yugoslavian divisions.

The Germans continue their offensive, but as their forces are still disorganized from the earlier offensive, they are pushed back once more. But the situation has now become hopeless, and as the fourth and final German offensive starts, the Czechoslovak army is quickly overrun and surrenders.

The German occupation begins on June 6th, 1939 with the formal surrender of Czechoslovakia and the execution of General Ráptór Jeden, who led the defense of Czechoslovakia to the bitter end, in the streets of Prague.

The Czech and Slovak people blame the treachery of their allies in the west and Poland for selling the country out to Germans and not intervening on their behalf.

Nice report, but indeed a sad ending.

I think I made some crazy mistake while posting that caused the whole first half of the post to repeat, now fixed

No experience in making long posts

Still thinking about which nation I should play next, hopefully one slightly less doomed from the beginning... (Maybe after I remove the restriction on Tank Division construction, having to separately research the divisions after the tanks themselves is annoying enough)

I haven't played HOI2 with the total realism mod yet, but Chekhoslovakia is probably not the best choice, as you've found out

I'd suggest playing Sweden or Finland (those are slightly less doomed) or if you want an Axis perspective, play Italy, which is probably fairly challenging
