First of all, a BIG thanks to Bobchase, who showed the way to get the Gyrocompass vernier working
![]() I have updated a version of my Optics mod for NYGM 3 with the U-505 compass graphics, and the new working vernier by Bobchase, since most of the files involved were the same and I wanted to have it mergued for my personal use first (versions for other mods/variants might come later, time permitting). The real use for SH3 is very limited, unless you are using the "Real navigation" mod, but what the heck, it's great watching it and knowing that's how the real thing worked ![]() The readme: This version includes a working Gyrocompass with vernier, thanks to Bobchase! The vernier is still in use in Anschutz compasses today, as you can see here: http://www.raytheon-anschuetz.com/index.php?StoryID=141&pid=43 and works as follows: The inner dial represents 10 degrees. Therefore, it will make a full turn each time the outer dial moves 10 degrees. This allows you to read with great accurancy the course change in the inner dial. The vertical fixed needle on the top lets you know both the course on the outer dial and the matching value in the inner dial. You'll notice that the end number of the outer dial always matches the proper number in the inner one (F.e. when the outer dial indicates a course of 13,23,33,43,53,63 etc. the inner dial will indicate "3"), allowing you to read the main dial with superb accurancy. Known problems: -Due to limitations of the SH3 engine, the reading will be inexact by about 0,3 degrees (yes, only point three of a degree!) when you reach the set course. For example, if you set course to 20 degrees true, the inner dial will rotate but stop more or less at 9,7, i.e. indicating a true course -when viewed together with the outer dial- of 19,7 degrees. This can be traced down to the fact that SH3 doesn't allow steering course in decimals (Only whole cyphers) while the new dial DOES allow reading decimals. For the game, anything decimal above 19 degrees, is a 20 degrees course, but the new dial will show the difference. Don't worry too much, as anyway steering a course with that accurancy in a WW2 vessel is more or less impossible. -There is no longer the draggable needle that shows the current selected course in the outer dial. I had to eliminate it because it had a tendency to get stuck with the inner dial. So I made it invisible, and now you will just click anywhere in the outer dial to input course. Watch for what your navigator says after that to ensure that you did input the proper course - due to graphics limitations you will need to clik a bit forward of where you would expect to.
