I saw a show on this a few weeks back. If I remember correctly they would still drive a stake through the sternum and but a large rock in the mouth. Weird stuff.

I think I saw something like this on Monster Quest. The dark ages brewed up a lot of superstition in an attempt to explain the diseases that occured then. It may be the brick in the mouth was just a way to shut up mouthy women...
