Default Naval Academy Naval Artillery

I have a problem with the munitions. I start Naval Artillery training with about 200 shells and they are not enough to sink at least 4 ships as required in the briefing. Any ideas how to deal with this?

Thanks.

the damage model by shelling has been changed if you are using GWX.

the best thing to do is to aim for the water line. put the shell into the water just before the hull... you will see a splash followed by an impact sound if you are doing it right.

this can sink a ship faster.

keep trying

Hmm, it's been a long time since I passed through the Academy.

Don't miss?

Shoot for the waterline.

Works in stock.

Are you using a supermod? The changed damage models may make it impossible to sink 4 ships with the shells on one boat.

Just don't bother. Or you can just get a "satisfactory" mark if you're trying to roleplay a kaleun. You don't get extra renown for completeing all of them, and it's basically a waste of time.

Yes, I'm on GWX3. It's gonna be quite boring to fire all 200 shells by myself, I thought my Matrosengefreiters could do it for me. But even then I'm not sure it'll be enough to sink all 4 ships by myself. I'll try waterline this time, but something tells me it may not be enough for the completion of this training.

Thanks.

Do not keep firing until they sink. They will sink after some hits below the waterline.
Just give them some time while you fire at another ship. Just make sure they are dead in the water.
And move in close before you fire, less missed shots.

Good advice, Lzs. I also noticed they sank even if I stopped firing and left for another ship. I'll try that. But if I understand it right I don't need to force my seamen fire on the ships, since I'll get a new crew in my first campaign?

Thanks.

In stock you get bonus renown for every exam you pass in the academy, so getting a satisfactory result is probably worth your while.
In GWX you get the maximum possible 1500 Renown just for passing the Navigation exam.

I think that's all correct?

Check out jimbuna's deck gun ammunition mod - increases the amount of ammunition you carry for the deck and flak guns.
It's still within historical limits so I don't consider it cheating!

That's correct. If you pass the the navigation exam you'll pick up the extra 1000 points. If you bypass the nav exam & dive straight into a career in 1940 or later (not sure about '39) you will start witth 500.

If you want to brush up on your gunnery skills then try to steer your your boat to where you're sailing parallel to your target. Drop to slow speed & aim for the waterline. You should be able to sink most of the targets with about 20-25 shots. This method works well with unarmed merchants. Do not attempt it with armed merchants. Their accuracy has been signifigantly increased in GWX. When dealing with an armed merchant I would approach no closer than 2500m & keep your bow perpendicular to the target. If you should hit the gun turret, remain at a safe distance (at least 2000m) as some of the merchants have secondary weapons (MG's).

actually, the best course of action would be blasting them from under the waves.

I guess so, but there are no torpedos as far as that training mission is concerned.

Thanks for your valuable recommendations, gents.
