Default disable thermal layers

Anyone know how to disable the thermal layer introduced by SH3 commander? I don't launch from SH3 commander every time (because it seems to overwrite my LRT mod install), and hence I'd like just to disable the layer, or to set it to be quite deep (like 300 m or so). Any ideas? I know it's a bit surgical, but anyone know what I need here?

I'll assume that you have read the SH3 Commander User Guide which tells you the file that you need to edit to adjust/remove the thermal layers feature. So, open that file, then delete everything between the lines:

Save and close. Done.

I'd be surprised if SH3Cmdr "overwrote your LRT" mod. The only changes SH3Cmdr makes to files that form part of the LRT mod relate to malfunction or sabotage effects (and ONLY if those options are selected by you), and are thus deliberate.

As LRT ships with the files that are modified by modders the most, viz Basic.cfg, **_menu.txt and menu_.ini, you might want to ensure that you correctly installed the mod, ie rolled back SH3Cmdr first etc, and try again. Not rolling back SH3Cmdr *before* enabling or disabling mods will create problems similar to the one you are describing.

Cheers - thanks for the reply. Yea - I might have been able to figure this out with more reading. I think I've blown it by installing mods without rolling back SH3 commander. It's too bad that there's no trace of Sh3 commander's changes in JSME. Like, I think I need to remove my last couple mods (LRT etc) then rollback SH3 commander, then reinstall all the mods and then run SH3 commander again (After I wipe the thermal layer section). I'm a bit horrified because I fear this might corrupt everything and my 31-patrol career might not survive the reinstall. Gasp. And if I wanted to go into SH3's files directly and push the thermal layer down really deep, I'd need to HEX-edit I suppose? If I could do this, I could just leave things as is (since it's working, with the exception of the thermal layer bit).

Anyway, sorry for noobing on the DIY component here.

Setting or file for what? Thermal layers? They are put there by SH3 Commander, and no other tool does that.

On a related note, why would anybody not use Commander? It's the best tool overall available for the game.

I can find the file easy enough.

It's what to change that's the question.

I don't know what any of this means.

Ok this sort of makes sense - each set starts with a prefix : 0_... 1_...

each set has the same variables, but with different values. The AI sonar depth seems to get deeper in later sets, making me think that the sets correspond to AI skill levels (novice, mid, veteran, elite) or something - but there are 5... Maybe these are 5 different random levels that the AI sensors can be set at. I think we can work with this...just a little clarification required.

Thanks for the detective work!

Ok - followed Jscones' advice; thermal layers are gone, and my uber DDs are back! Once again, being caught in perfectly still water by several DDs means certain death! Yay?!
