Default Harbor sinking...or is it?

I got a mission to recon the Hiroshima harbor, and I sunk 2 Marus there, but on my way out, I noticed a Fuso battleship in the neighboring shipyard of Hatsukaichi.

Sitting there, helpless, I approached her, and sent my 4 remaining forward torps right into her all along her lenght. Apparently it wasn't enough. I turned around and sent the remaining 4 aft torps in the same manner, carefully spreading them along the waterline. Here I noticed that the ship was virtually 45dgs turned over, alsmost turned right over.

And apparently the game thought that the ship was all right, no skining message, although every other whip by this point would have been deemed sunk.

Anyone knows what's the deal here? Is the water too shallow to allow this monster to sink low enought to be registered as sunk?

I spent all my remaining torps on this single target and I really don't want to leave it just damaged.

Deck gun time! Its a glitch where ships don't sink in harbours unless enough damage is done to it. Happens in SH3 and SH4. I think its because the water is not deep enough for the game to constitute it "sunk"

That's what I suspected. Hope destroyers dispatched to find me won't come any closer until I finish the job.

Thanks for making this clear.

look under water

Stbd.chine is prob.on bottom, but port deck gun attack would put her flat,& battleship guns can not depress enough to return fire.

Heh...I realoaded the save when I was still reasonably close to the site and two bugs poped up.

1: a gunboat sailed out in the instant I got a bit close...upside down. Now this is what I call patriotism:

2: The Fuso started bounding all over the place, and eventually landed in a spot where it was finally sunk:

If a bug corrects another bug, I consider it a success.

easy way to finish them off in port is for carriers and battleships to go for the magazines in stead of a spread shot since they dont always have enough water under them for flooding so you will need secondary explosions to get the kill.

for battleships i put two fish under the rear turrent and two under the front turrent and that will usually do it but if not i put one more fish in same spot front and rear.
if its the yamato i put 4 fish front and 4 fish rear in the same locations then wait to see the results, sometimes that will be enough.

I love that upside-down gunboat pic! :rotfl:

That's why I hate harbor raiding - the ship may not register as sunk. I've wasted many a torpedo in futile harbor raids in SH3 and SH4. I guess I never learned my lesson because as with my first patrol in TMO 1.62 I decided to see what Tokyo had. It was about mid-December 1941 when I decided to have a look. I had USS Triton. When I finally made it to Tokyo there was nothing but some merchants. Not wanting to give myself away to any harbor patrols (a few auxiliary subchasers) I didn't sink any. I was making my way back out of the area when one of those dumb tugboats with depthcharges starts pinging me. I didn't think they had sonar. Well, the aux subchaser gets some buddies and I sleep with the fishes. That was about an hour and half down the tubes!

The IJN claimed all those ships at Pearl Harbor as sunk...

Most were refloated and got their revenge.

If it ain't sunk in blue water, it ain't sunk.

Well... yeah! Of course. Arizona blew in to bits, and Oklahoma had enough damage to roll over completely.

The rest were refloated to fight again.

Realistically, most ships hit at a DOCK would settle.

So that's it! Not deep enough to sink! Didn't have any extras left to try again. Question though-how long do you have to say in the harbour to accomplish the recon? Can it be done submerged scope up?

As long as it takes to make the pictures actually.

Just raise the periscope, lock one of the ships and hit the photo icon in the periscope menu. If you had enough ships taken on film, you'll have finished the mission.

I know that, I was simply aiming to give those IJN crews a hard time restoring the sucker. When I get the sunk message, I know I done my best.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try that next time.

I actually love them. It's always exciting to get past the patrols and these missions usually yield some nice pieces of Marus in docks. A few clicks for those pics are worth the trouble.

Much better than those 4 days long patrols in places where nobody goes but me. :P

Yeah, but real subs never did that. The recon missions belong at invasion beachheads.
