Default New career,New Flotilla,New Year,New crew

HHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPP

Hi All,
Sailed out of Wilhelmshaven for all my previous careers (starting Aug 1939)
Decided on a "new" start and went for St Nazaire 1940 did the obligitory sail round the bay sinking target ships and was ordered to patrol DH54
Decided to break in my green crew by taking them a sightseeing trip towards Gibraltar, and on returning to my plotted course, receive message of convoy heading East.........Straight towards me.
OK lads, it will consist of a couple of merchants, destroyers and we're on GWX3 .......easy pickings for your first patrol.....just as well cos I only have ONE fully experienced watch crew. No repair quals or anything else for that matter
Dive to get fix on them, there they are, 3 contacts 315 degrees, Long distance, plot course to intercept and the sonar guy starts shouting out multiple contacts....I've stumbled on a massive convoy can only "see" 3 DDs....and approx 20 - 25 Merchants 6 broad 4 deep (what is an"Empire"....new to me)... My crew are green as grass, The "Bay" narrows towards "Gibraltar Strait?? "meaning anything I slow down might trap me in narrow waters if I hang around for kill.........Advice please......It normally takes me about 5 -6 patrols to find anything on this scale...and I've had 200 Km of The Atlantic to play with before landfall.

btw I enjoy playing DiD...save the episode for practice but start new career

Personally, if it was me and i was getting funneled into a narrow channel Ie Gibraltar, I would attack ASAP before i had absolutely no room for manouver never mind the huge amount of Surface vessels that are available to the Tommies in the straights just waiting for a chance to hunt you down.

I'd go in at a diagonal from the front of the Convoy to try and avoid the Escorts, Hit them with all i could on the Juicy targets and then run for it. To return to attack again when so close the Gibraltar would be suicide. To many roving DD's in the area not attached to the Convoy to assist.

Set yourself up for attack as best to 90 degrees as you can
Preferably in the convoy lanes
That way you have targets fore and aft
I usually run silent before this time as dont wanna give the game away
Target a ship in front of you quite far away and use fast speed torps set for impact if weather allows
Then target a ship behind you though pick a closer one and set slow torp speeds
Back to the front and target a close ship slow torp settings
After all 6 fired slowly submerge to run out the convoy rear and as deep as you can
With practice torps will hit roughly same time giving no chance for evasion

With good shooting all 6 torps will hit and you should get 3 kills and the escorts shouldnt know where you are

If you think you can take out\cripple a ship with one each then go for that
I would rather use 2 than let one crawl away

I rarely reload torps while attacking as with realistic load times takes around 20 mins and you could be 50 mtrs down by then on the way to safety

If your not equipped like BBW with an electronic slide rule and a palm held computer you might just want to fire at six separate targets in the hope of slowing down or stopping those that don't sink........shout FREEEEEEEEDOM then kiss yer ar$e goodbye before crash diving for the first 50 metres before setting to silent running on a reverse course to the convoys direction of travel.

Thankyou very much guys
Advice greatly appreciated, and carried out to BdUs delight (3 Merchants ) NO DAMAGE to sub or crew.
Had to rest all crew near Canary Islands... completed patrol and set off for home loading external torpedoes on the way. Received a report regarding single merchant heading same way and intercepted submerged. Fired off last forward eel....DUD....Surface and sink the thing with deckgun
Incoming!!!
S**T its late 1940.... He's armed.... 5 shots later U46 is lost with all hands

Back to "New career"
