Default Boring escorts

First of all let me say I am using a older GWM version. Only the manual aiming option is disabled.

The problem I encounter is that the escorts are to easy evaded. My last patrol was in late december '42. So I would have expected that the escorts or lone DD's would spot from miles away with their radar en ping me. Then attack me with this new device, the Hitchcock.

But somehow the DD's refuse to give me their full load. The last time I heard a 'ping' was in a previous career. The depth charging is way, way of. I can cruise by on the surface on a nice calm ocean within 5 km range of a DD and have nothing to worry about. This would be nothing new if it was the early 1940's, but now it is almost 1943.

Without escorts on a high alert, attacking a convoy isn't such a challenge

So...is it possible I somehow disabled a realism setting. I find it really strange that the escorts haven't made use of their sonar in late 1942

Which GWX version you are using? I'd suggest to download and install the GWX Gold aka GWX 3.0. That should make them abit more harder. Just dont come back crying they're now too hard.

Ow and welcome to SubSim!

First let me say welcome to the forum.

Second, you really need to upgrade to GWX 3.0

Third, The escorts in most version of GWX really start to be equipped with radar in early 1943.

I would say try these tactics again in April - May 1943 and see if your luck changes. im sure it will.

I'll add that GWX 3.0 fixes a lot of minor things - give it a whirl if you desire. i can promise a challenge, though you are still sort of in "the happy times" in 1942... i mean the USA only JUST NOW got involved in the war... radar will really start to make the scene around spring of 43

good luck

I am afraid my computer can't handle GWX3. GWX2.1 already slowed down the game so much I got the advise to run GWX 1.2 (i think it is that one).

Remains one question: if most ships have radar from 1943 on, then why do I get the message 'radar detected'? Apparently they do have radar...

some will have radar in 42.

Whether or not they detect you depends on a number of factors.

check out the manual, perhaps it will hold the answers

Maybe you're just a good tactician

Seriously, playing smart and safe has its advantages over pressing an attack, so if that's your play style you may find yourself in better positions to avoid the escorts. Being able to get within 5km during the day is a little strange, but as others have said radar isn't everywhere yet, and you may have gotten lucky with a novice crew.

I find mid-1943 is where it starts to be a real pain to avoid escorts, and by 1944 I have trouble simply surviving patrols.

If you are running GW 1.2 then you should consider giving NYGM a try. It is not as resource intensive as GWX, and if you are using such an old version of GW, then you haven't gameplay-wise the benefits of GWX 2 onwards, which did set the gameplay level in terms of difficulty and realism more on par with NYGM. Between GWX3 and NYGM3, choosing is a matter of personal taste and/or willing the added bonus of improved graphics and terrific visuals that GWX ships besides the much reworked AI and sensors of both mods. But between NYGM3 and the old GW 1.2, I think the option should clearly be NYGM :hmm:
