Im probably an oddity in that I started with SH4 BEFORE I backtracked to SH3.
Over in the Pacific I fell in love with the old S-Boat and enjoyed cruising around in that old rust bucket until I promoted up to a Sargo class. The game quickly lost interest for me. The difference in speed and firepower made things too easy, and I was racking up impossible kills despite RFB and extreme realism mods. NOw here in the Atlantic, am I having a wonderful time in my trusty TYpe II....carefully learning to hoard my measly 5 torpedos and only going for the sure kill. Still...Im at the poitn where I have plenty of reknown and am considering switching to a VII, but I am scared that again the game will become boring as the speed and firepower will make things too easy. AM I just being silly, or are there others out there that have similar feelings. Do I dare take a II for the entire war? :hmm: |

Wait and go to a type IXC.
And enjoy the second happy time on the US eastern seaboard. Or just go with the flow the are many different theaters of operations to try out. Im sure you will enjoy life after 43. Then it gets really hard. I will be very impressed if you make it to wars end. Are you playing stock or are you using any Supermods?

Same feelings here. I started with SHIV and liked the s-boat too. I never changed to anything higher than a Porpoise (that's also a beauty).
But the Pacific got boring quickly. It was just too easy even with RFB and RSRDC. Now in SH III I'm in Nov. 1940 on my 12th patrol in U45 (type VIIB) and have a lot of fun. The only thing that keeps me from using the Type II is that you have to start in Kiel and have to go through that channel. That just takes to much time... ![]()

You don't have to use the Canal. It itself is a mod, and the game didn't use to have it. We had to go around Denmark to get anywhere. You can still do that.
Myself, I like to think of the reality, which is that in real time it saves a lot of time and fuel. But Murr44 is right: just up your TC rate for the 'When Near Land' function.

I am using the GWX mod, so thats that.
I was waiting until a good 'realistic moment' to switch to a new boat. On my last cruise with the II I got awarded the Knights Cross, and figured....well this would be when they realistically put thier new hero insomething more effective......but something keeps me from pressing that button to move to the VII. I suppoe at some point its not ralistic to use the II's anymore as thery were withdrawn for training purposes. When was the last date a II was used on a war patrol? |

Go for a VII! If your using GWX it's difficult enough to keep the interest but you will be able to get out beyond Ireland to hit convoys.
I switched to a IXB, grand for singletons but I get killed as soon as I see a convoy, and I'm still in 39/40! |

Playing them both ATM.
Thing is the theaters are completely different, and for the time being I'm just waiting for RFB to mature - just as GWX had the time to do. All good things come to those who wait ![]() |

![]() for the OP, it will get harder as the war progresses, eventually you will be pleased just to get in a good firing position (GWX2.1) Last edited by Uboatman; 12-04-08 at 06:39 PM. |

I prefer the big boats myself, but I started with SH4 as well. I saw it at Wal-Mart and thought "Holy crap! I haven't seen a subsim since I played Wolfpack and U-boat back in the day!"
After that, I got the expansion, and learned of SH3 and GWX. If you are using stock SH3, I'd suggest GWX 2.1, as it does make things as real as a sim can get. The escorts and planes may have superhuman abilities sometimes, but that's what it was like for real Kaleuns. Of course, any game, or mod, is still just a game, and games can be solved, but GWX does a damn good job of making it a difficult puzzle to solve. It's a big download, but every minute spent wating equates to hours of enjoyment (and tension, and frustration, which is what realism is about to a large degree ![]() Good hunting!

@ Murr44 and Sailor Steve
Thanks for your tips, but I knew already that I can increase the maximum TC with SHIII cmdr. I only switched it to 64x when being close to land. I think that everything else would be too dangerous in case I'm sailing towards a tiny island that doesn't show on the map (I haven't encoutered one of those yet in SHIII [I did in SH4 btw] but I read that some people had problems with them and high TC). ![]()

I too only use 64x when near land, as I've been taken by surprise by gradually shoaling bottoms at high TC, and lost the boat before I even knew I'd run aground.
I also never use the 'Kiel Canal In/Out' buttons, prefering to set my own waypoints, go at 64x (1 hour every minute - it only takes 7-10 minutes to get through) and when I near my last waypoint I go to 1x, set new points for a few miles, and enjoy the scenery for a minute or two before going back to TC. It makes the game much more believable and enjoyable - for me at least. ![]()
