Default DirectX

Has anyone tried Directx 10/11 for XP HOME? Does it work?

From a first approach it seems interference with resolution fix! No change to 1360x1024 and the 1680x1050 looks like 1280x800. The graphics themselves aren't improved!

DX 10+ is for Vista users only, XP home won't make any difference

It's not even a hacked version.
It was an atempt to create a wrapper
around the Directx 10 SDK.
Allowing XP to use the wrapper to play Directx 10
Games on XP.

The original Team Shut down.
So it's a non-supported thing.
And the only release was an Alpha.

Unless you are HIGHLY experienced?
Don't mess with it!

And it does not help with SH3 as it's written for Directx 9
You'd have to hack SH3 code to accept DX 10 stuff.

Hmmm... I wonder. I've installed the Nov08 DX redist and I've noticed some DX10 .dll files installed on my XP box...

I'd have to get Process Explorer fired up and see if any of them are being loaded...:hmm:

DeepIron Microsoft sends the whole package. The exe program decides what your system needs and install the batch files. Both DX9 and DX10 are included.

Ok then! It is very annoying how much misleading are some things, even for those who have some knowledge!

That's precisely the point... I checked the install and a number of DX10 files were installed from the redist. Some of those that were installed were flagged as DX10 only. I opened up a few and peeked inside to verify this. I find it interesting that the installer would install *any* DX10 .dll files to my system at all on my XP SP3 OS *if* DX were only intended for Vista.

In essence, this would indicate that *some* applications running under XP are capable of using DX10 libs...

Cheers.

I'm going to guess that the setup.exe may install files to your computer but maybe those DX10 are inactive. Or their are related files that are linked to DX9 files? To be honest I don't know the technical stuff. I switch over to Vista over a year and a half ago. I don't have XP systems anymore. Even my old rigs using vista 32 ultimate and Home Premium.

2 desktops
2 laptops.

I can't test your theory.

No worries... As soon as I can get hold of a DX10 enabled application, I'll fire up Process Explorer and check out what libs are being loaded. BTW, I did check on a few of the DX10 only files and they appear to be exactly that... no sign of DX9 integration whatsoever...

The whole discussion is really academic but as I've done .NET DX game programming in the past, it still interests me... (I prefer using OpenGL much more.)

Cheers!

It's a simple process to cut the DX 10 files from the system and place on a
back up drive.
Then reboot.
You'll see no effect!
Also run the DXDiag program.
Notice no DX 10 test is done.
It's just more of Billy's Garbage on your system.
I'd bet Microsoft has stock in the Hard Drive Industry!!
