I could not believe this when it happened. Could someone MOD a rear view mirror on my sub?
I was attacking a Task Force. Right place, right time, so easy to approach but had to keep the speed up which, of course, tipped off the DDs. Night time but not pitch black so I looked around and the DDs were a ways off so I turned my attention to the BB leading the Flattop (and of course several cruisers and other ships) but they were in the far lane, and I am loaded with acoustics, so I figure they are going to go for the closer boats which are still good targets but I wanted the BB and Carrier. (and I knew I shouldn't have loaded with only acoustics but I did it anyway) So while I'm thinking of how I am going to get there, I suddenly hear an engine noise and well , you know what I said. He came right along side me from behind, full speed and I frantically start clicking buttons, even though I know it is too late. I spent too much time with the scope up. Before I could even hit crash dive and a major turn, his stern was passing by my scope and he was dropping DCs about 3 inches apart. I never saw so many come off a DD!!! This is the good part, when all the DCs exploded, it BLEW THE BOAT OUT OF THE WATER. Really!!! The bow was in the AIR!! Not by much and the stern stayed in the water, but now I am on the surface in the middle of a Task Force. Well, ya think maybe they started shooting? Periscope depth with the Jyunsen B is a little over 20m if I remember right and I got blown clear out of the water. Ok, so I get out the manual to see what to do now. ![]() Peabody
