Default New to SH4

Hey everyone,

im jason and im new to naval warfare sims. i discovered this game 2 days ago and couldn't believe something like this genre slipped by me (no pun about subs intended ). ive been watching video tutorials and reading about tactics and the like and am really fascinated by it all. im somewhat knowledgeable with 18th century naval warfare, but that doesnt wholly apply. anyway, just saying hello. looking forward to learning more in the weeks to come.

i do have one question at the moment.

i did the tutorial missions and messed around with some quick action, but when i jump into the american career from pearl harbor, why does my radar not work?

Welcome Jason,

You'll get a surface radar later on. You do have an air detection radar which is not represented as a specific "station" in the game.

Well that maybe also an issue, the game tends to be "bug friendly" and "pc-configuration dependent" but I don't think that's your case.

Basic notes for newcomers:

1) Remember to patch to latest patch level.
2) Use Q to open torpedotubedoors - before you fire the torpedo. Otherwise it will greatly increase your chances of missing your target.

Other than that - don't trust the manual - it has lots of stuff left from SH3.

Ask in this forum instead!

Default Surface radar vs Air radar

Jason;
just to add to what Diopos said;

Your early career subs will not have surface detection radar although the station is graphically represented as a station inside your sub (but it doesn't work). An oversight by the devs.
You will get verbal radar contact warnings from your crew, that will be an air contact (SD radar) which does not have a station that you can go to, it's an automatic function. Do NOT ignore these warnings (particularly if you are using the TMO or RFB mods). Dive for protection.

Later as you progress you'll be able to acquire the SJ radar which will be your surface detection radar and the station will actually be active. Be advised that this switches off when you dive and does NOT automatically switch on when you surface (at least in the TMO mod). So remember to check that your surface radar is on after coming up from a dive (once you have acquired it as part of your kit).

Hope this helps, and welcome.

It does come back on automatically with the 1.5/UBM patch installed though.

Default Silent Hunter III

Jason,

First. Welcome aboard!

Second. If you like Silent Hunter IV. Then you need to get Silent Hunter III. In my opinion is a somewhat better sim. Don't get me wrong I like Silent Hunter IV. I'm actually playing both at the same time. SH III on my XP. And SH IV (First patrol, first carreer patrol ) on my Vista.

Enjoy.
