Default Magestic, magnificent and powerfull as she is

the Cape of Storms greeted her with 3 meter swells which prevented her crew from coming ashore. A friend of mine from New York and myself went down to where her helicopters were coming in to try and get on board but it was selected visitors only.

What is interesting in the clip is that the last visit in 1967 of a US carrier our apartheid government at the time would not allow any of the black crew to come ashore .... this just demonstrates how far South Africa has come.

3 meter swells doesent really sound like all that much. I guess it was messing with the smaller boats shuffeling the tourists.

10ft swells is enough to shut down the Marthas Vineyard ferry.

Well it was "all that much"

It might have seemed a breezy spring day in Cape Town but the Cape of Storms was too much for the mighty American aircraft carrier the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Around 4 600 sailors had to cool their heels on board in Table Bay on Saturday because the ship was unable to launch her liberty boats after the swell snapped one of the ship's accommodation ladders. The sailors desperately wanted to come ashore and traders in the V&A Waterfront were looking forward to the rush, but the sea had other plans as swells of up to 3m rolled into the bay.

I remeber goin aboard a US carrier here in Sydney just before 9/11. The Kittyhawk was a great day out for my father and I, and I feel lucky that we went aboard as they don't allow that anymore to the general public.
