I've been playing the 2nd scenario of the Red storm rising campaign titled holddown exercise whereby the player gets to control the FFG and obliged to detect and track within 3nmi of a Russian Kilo until it is forced to surface.
I've begun prosecuting the Kilo with active pinging at 19:12. So basically since 19:12 I'm well within 3nm of the tracked Kilo. Now it has been a little more than 4 hours after my first active sonar contact at 19:12. At all times I've been able to maintain contact well within 3nm(400-2000 yards at all times) and verified my range to contact with active pinging. It's easy when the helo helps you out. Three quarter of the time the Russian Kilo were running in all direction at 13-16 knots. It did slowed to 1 knots for about half to one hour. But I don't think it had the chance to recharge its battery. The problem is even after 4 hours it is still capable of running at relatively high speed of 16 knots. I did try an experiment with the 636 Kilo in quick mission where I ran the Kilo at 14 knots. It exhausted its battery in a little over 2 hours. But the AI was capable of sustaining its speed after 4 hours. 3 quarter of which was spent running at 13-16 knots. Is the AI cheating? Or were there more than 1 sub?

Oops I just found out much to my surprise that the contact sub was not a Kilo but a Foxtrot :hmm:. I just read that from subguru site.
So the question needs rephrasing: Does AI controlled diesel submarine have an advantage in terms of underwater endurance than player controlled diesel sub?
