Uber DD's in 39 this is a little unreal

November 39, my crew spots DD (V&W) closing fast but 8k's away, crash dive but can only go to 60 meters, running silent I alter course, he's still about 3km away but he's matching my course! at this time in war WTF! He's pinging me, after trying to elude his pinpoint acurate DC's for half hour he finally gets me!
Could someone tell me the adjustment in AI_Sensors.dat to change for this time period please?

Why the assumption that he's "Uber"?

The loss rate for U-boats in 1939 was actually higher than at any point for the next 3.5 years. It's a misconception that the start of the war means a "happy time", or that British ASW was necessarily incompetent. I'd say you got a bit unlucky - if it was a 100% chance every time in 1939, I'd be a bit more worried though.

Did you lower your periscopes? Both the attack and observation periscopes. Once a DD track me because I forget to lower my observation periscope.

Besides, the DD in your case is 8k away. You don't have to crash dive. A slow dive might have attract less attention to your boat.

It's Uber, he should not be able to detect me whilst I'm 3km off silent running, matching my every move, if I go left he goes left, if I go right he goes right, I don't think that is correct!
@ Basil, my scope wasn't up, was just going to patrol grid & crew spotted, I crash dived then changed course by this time he would have been around 4ks off, then went to silent running, by 3km's I noticed he changed course toward me, so I changed again, he matched my every move, since he would have been on a near parallel course he should not have been able to detect me.

Edit:
Wonder where I got this version of AI_Sensors.dat from, it is dated 10th August 2008, not been modified by S3D, anyone know of a recent mod to this file??? It seems that all the sensors MinHeight values have been changed from -238 to -300, any ideas to what this does?

I'm pretty sure that GWX DDs start off poor and get better, but there is always the tiny chance of one being Elite. Maybe you just got unlucky this time.

As with real war times, there were pre-conflict trained crews and then there were n00bs. Why does everyone think that, suddenly at the start of WWII, every Escort/Destroyer came into existence.

I dont know about your problem, The DDs in 1939, 1940 seem to be always off, and have never came close to hitting me.(there was one time. Thats a long story).

Yeh these guys sensors were so good they knew where I was 3 to 4 kms away travelling at 21 knots whilst I was 60 meters down silent running, I think they beamed down sensors from the enterprise!
Oh well! any ideas on the MinHeight settings?

S**t happens mate... Really bad luck...?!

I stopped playing 1939, start my patrols in 1940/41 as there is no real challenge in "39... if you are not intruder into Liverpool or ScapaFlow ...

I enjoy playing first quarter of 1942, the best gamplay...

Reece, it is not worthy of gameply tweak,... just happens once in 20-30 convoy raids in a first year.

Hi!

I think your basic problem is that you were spotted in relatively shallow water, and if you crash-dived (engines to maximum speed) then it is likely the destroyer was able to track you underwater until you reset your engines to silent running.

Assuming the destroyer closed the distance to your last known location at about 20 knots, your U-boat probably didn't get more than a kilometer away from the point where you began silent running, and changing course would have only decreased your distance away from the last contact point. When the destroyer arrived, you would have been well within its sensor cone but with shallow water preventing you from diving beneath it.

At that point, the destroyer's ability to find you really depends on the destroyer's crew quality and the aspect angle of your U-boat with respect to the destroyer, so it's my guess that you had the bad luck to be up against a good ASW operator.

Pablo

My minheight values are also currently -300, and I've not changed them (nor do any of the mods I have installed). Perhaps this is the setting that SH3C changes to simulate thermal layers?

Well certainly I use SH3 Commander OLC I found as you pointed out the Randomised events.cfg file contains:
