Default I've Not Seen This Before

I intercepted a Jap convoy in late 1943 near Truck. After sinking a couple of the merchies I took a look around with the external camera. There was a small merchant that had two turrets on it, one about a third back from the bow and another on the stern. These were not the open guns usually seen on a merchant--they were turrets such as on a warship. As I watched, she pumped star shell after star shell into the air. Also, she was completely light gray in color. At first I thought it was a video card anomally, but that was not the case. All the other ships were marked normally. I wondered if she was some kind of Q ship. After the action was over I layed doggo for a while nearby. After the escorts departed I went to periscope depth for a look around. There off my stern 800 yards away was the Q ship. I fired one torpedo at her. That's when the next odd thing occured--when the torpedo hit the ship she vaporized, no debris, no nothing. One second she was there, then boom, she was totally gone. Wierd.

Flying Dutchman after a refit?

That is weird, never had anything like that happen before. :hmm:

Using any mods? 1.4 / 1.5?

:hmm: ...I got out my SHIV paperwork and found a clause in the User Agreement, in fine print it clearly states:

end user shall refrain from imbibing any liguid[s] from containers carrying the following label and or logo :...

...for at least 24 hours prior to playing this sim. Failure to do so may result in unpredictable consequences which may in turn lead to posts on related and or unrelated forums.

Case closed.

But you were right..I don't ever recall anything as weird as what you related..and there have been some strange reports indeed.... ..yours will take the prize I think...unless a kraken should suddenly appear to pull down a fleetboat...

On the USS Tang's third patrol she ran into a 2 ship convoy with and smaller 1-2000 ton freighter armed with both guns and DC's escprting another larger 6-7000 ton freighter. That sounds like historically it was possible.

I remember something about that merchants were given a small number of depth charges that they could drop on any suspected sub contact. It was more for show than anything else, as they had no way of predicting the place or depth of the sub after they last saw it.

I don't believe that any sub was sunk by this method.

I just posted in the RFB mod thread about an anomaly I encountered yesterday. I had just completed a mission to recon Tarawa & I got two radar contacts. It was night & raining heavily so I decided to stay on the surface, I eventually HIT the radar contact & the rain shrouded ship was obviously a merchant, but it wasn't actually there....the ship was invisible almost as if it had a cloaking device from star trek. You could see it if the rain was hitting it or after the rain stopped I fired my deck gun at it & the shell burst mist/smoke made the area visible (in outline only) for a second until the smoke & mist cleared. You could see the outline of the hull in the water but nothing else unless rain/mist/smoke etc. made the ghostly image visible. I took 7% hull damage when I bumped into it too, so something was there.
