Default Huge Saved Game File

Greetings,

This is a first for me. Normally the biggest saved game I'v had was around 5 Mb but now for some unknown reason the latest file size is 875 Mb and growing :hmm:

Anyone else had this happen?

My mods are

PE, RFB v1.5, RSRDC latest.

When you save, are you also clicking on the box labeled "REPLAY"?

It's saving your patrol as a video file that you can replay.

Negative, I never tick the Replay button but will check it though.

Thanks for the response.

Default big save file

every time you save on the same name in the same patrol = file is growing. One time ~ 1 MB. Mine normally is ~ 2 MB, but one time was ~ 8 MB. I saved ~ 6 times one the same name on the same patrol.

If that is what is happening maybe you need to change your saving ways or one day you'll perhaps lose a whole Patrol..maybe career.

I was saving, over and over, under the same name each time like "Patrol 1" for example.

Then one day the last save would not reload. The forum concensus was that multiple saves under the same name was at fault. I started naming each save with a unique name ("patrol 1 a", "patrol 1 b", ect.) and never had a reload save problem since. True...I have lots of saves to delete with each new patrol but it is worth it for me.

Just a friendly suggestion.

Known problem, check the RFB and RSRDC threads. That seems to pop out once in a while, though I think they've almost solved it(=it occurs quite rarely). You might want to tell the RFB team the details(sub, date, location, career starting time, etc) to help them hunt down the cause.

Also, always keep your last "Auto-Leaving_Port" save. That way if your patrol gets corruupted you can load the Leaving Port save and not lose your whole career.

Default Save games

For what it's worth I usually break down my saves into identifyable "chunks".
e.g.
First save game will be named "Bungo Straits en route"
Second save game will be named "Bungo Straits in loc"
Third save game will be named "Bungo Straits RTB"

Between those saved games I'll use the same name but append an "a" and "b" etc if I've picked something up on radar/sonar etc to save before or after impending action.

This way the various stages of the patrol are clear and it's easy to restart, if necessary, at an appropriate point.

I'll also usually go into the save game menu once in a while and delete older games just to keep things tidy and not use up tons of space.

Having said all that, I can't remember if the save games are saved on the C drive (I know the logs are). I'll have to check, if it's the C drive then I don't have as much space as my other drives.

I rename each save as well. First patrol is 1.1 and as I save within that patrol I name them 1.2. 1.3... following suit until I arrive back to port. For my second patrol when I save I name the save 2.1, 2.2...until I arrive back to port. It keeps the huge save files down.

Now, if you get blasted out of the water and need to start a new career, go to the MY DOCUMENTS folder and find the SH4 folder. In there is two saved files of your finished career. Just delete these and when you start a new career, all the previous saved games will be gone.

Thanks for the responses all

I actually did save under different names but all it did was continue to increase the file size. It got up to 2.8 Gb. Bloomin huge. Now the one thing I did notice, the replay option was greyed out after saving the file a couple of times therefore couldn't save it as a replay file anyway so I'm wondering if that was the problem child because it may have reverted to a replay saved file instead :hmm:

The other thing I did was that once I had upgraded the sub, I saved the "Autosaved arriving at port" (I think) file. Maybe that's a no no to do.

Anyway, I'm back at port and have refitted the sub and have gone out to the new patrol zone but this time saved it after I left the port. The option to save it as a replay was active now so I'll see what happens when I save the situation a second time. I'll keep you all posted.

As noted in a previous post, the bug is in RFB. If I remember, it is the Tambor and Sargo class subs that do it. When you get the Gato, it will go back to normal size saves.

The RFB Team said it would be fixed in the upcoming release.

Ah! Excellent only I started off in a Gato so the problem doesn't lay with the other sub types only.

I'll be darn. :hmm: When I started my career in an S-Boat, everything was fine. When I got the Tambor class, big save files like your having then when I got the Gato class, everything went back to normal.

IIRC, it was a divide by zero problem before but I think it was in RSRD. I'm sure the RFB Team will get it fixed for the next release.

There has been some chatter that specific boats cause this problem. I will advise LukeFF that the tambor seems to be creating some issue.
