After reading the Dead Is Dead thread, it occurred to me it would be nice to have some type of "passive AI" for my boat. Its one thing to check the "dive to periscope depth" as the default action, when a warship is spotted; but could you please slow the boat as well, once you are at periscope depth. Or dive deeper if its heading right at you. Or change course a bit to stay out of its way. Maybe some type of interface with a list of preselected options so that I could say "I'm going to the head for awhile, #2 you have the boat". And actually still have an intact boat when I get back. And before some of you say "well thats what save or pause option is for." I agree, but it would certainly add a layer of realism to turn command over to your second, retire for the evening (the real captains had to sleep sometime), and have a nice "dry" report of the nights events in the morning. Is there anything like this out there? Is it possible?

That struck a funny bone in me. When I was deep into Aces of the Deep, I was on the beach with a broken leg recovering. I love the sound of the sea and AOD was perfect. So I ran the puter 24/7 and did it all in real time. I put a speaker near my bed (bunk) and immersed myself into the 4 on and 4 off drill. When a target was sighted the voices would force me out of my bed and hobble to the command center. Talk about immersion. Sick. I know. But even today, I shut the sim down with the last image on my screen - my bunk before I hit save. Sick. I know. The added feature is my real life bed faces out to sea and I hear real surf, awake to the gulls, grab some hot Joe and maybe start the sim (or not). I just may go sailing on the real sea here in the north Atlantic and get real salt spray in my face.

I used to wish one of the default choices was "Crash Dive", especially when spotting a plane or warship. Then one day I was entering Wilhelmshaven when an air raid hit. I imagined my boat hitting the shallow bottom at full speed, which in the game would kill everybody.
These days I never leave the computer without pausing, and my default action is set to 'Keep doing what you're doing. Maybe they won't notice." I can then decide the best course of action. Of course, the first thing I usually do is hit the 'C' key anyway. I think a blacked-out 'sleep' time with the 1WO in charge would be cool, but it seems some things just can't be modded. Still...

Come on guys, get real! Would anybody really want to leave Bernard in charge? It's bad enough having him on board, let alone in command...! Makes me shudder to think what he might do.:rotfl:

Okay, I'm sorry, but could someone please tell me who the hell Bernard is? I keep hearing all this Bernard talk... I don't know who came up with this nonsense, but all at once everything is Bernard this and Bernard that. What the hell is going on here, people!?
![]() Now, I am no expert but I am assuming that the game code would have to be manipulated to implement a mod like this. Maybe someone knows for sure, I don't. But I am pretty sure. ![]() |

A long time ago, in a thread not so far away, a Ferret posted a funny. He gave it the name Bernard, and others started using it, until Bernard became so popular as the class screw-up even the devs put him into SH4 U-Boat Missions, making the default captain's name Bernard von Umfal. Today Bernard is the catch-all for who we blame when something bad happens on our boat; especially when it's our own fault.
Here is the humble beginning of our sordid tale: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=84773

At least I have a real name. Unless of course 'Rover' is a real name.

S' PC[/quote Salute* This pic was taken two years a go and resume (to me) your words...time to time i have and feel the need to make a trip...and find myself one more time at the sea, clean my spirit and mind, and more important...see with your own eyes how small you are in this world wich we call...HOME! After a week at sea...finaly land, Portuguish land...and you can see by my face very very tired but with a big smile of satisfaction! ![]() ![]()
