Default Maybe a stupid question re: GWX 2.1 and SH3 Commander, but...

OK, I installed everything for a nice GWX 2.1 experience except for the SH3 Commander files. At this point I stumbled into... not exactly an obstacle, but a doubt.

I have the GWX 2.1 config files for SH3 Commander (GWX_21.1_Cfg_4_SH3Cmdr3.0.7z). The instructions say that you have to unzip the content into the /cfg directory of SH3 Commander, which sounds clear enough.

However, by unzipping the files I see three directories in the .7z archive: /cfg /flotilla and /uboat - which are directories in my SH3 Commander installation too.

My question: should I overwrite the "fresh" SH3 Commander directories with those in the GWX 2.1 archive, or everything in the archive must go into the /cfg directory of SH3 Commander (thus creating /cfg /flotilla and /uboat subdirectories in the /cfg directory of SH3 Commander)?

Maybe I'm being too scrupolous, but I would hate to mess up my GWX 2.1 installation right on the last step!

Thanks for ther help!

Vince

I'm weird. I've never unzipped any file directly into a folder. I always open it up and place everything individually.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that it should be unzipped into the main SH3 Commander folder, not the CFG folder. There are three separate folders, and they match the same three folders in Commander.

As I said, I may be wrong, but I have them in that way and I've never had a problem.

My exact feeling. However, both the readme and the GWX 2.1 manual explicitly state:

"Please unzip the contents of this archive DIRECTLY into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder. You may like to backup the existing files first."

and (in the GWX manual - pag. 68 of the 2.1 version):

* Ensure you are running SH3 Commander R2.6 or greater, as prior releases are not supported.

* ...Extract the contents [of the GWX 2.1 cfg archive] into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder. Refer to the readme.txt in the zip file for more detailed information.

This is why I'm baffled.

I agree, it's confusing; and I admit I don't have a definitive answer. I think I'm right, but...

Where the hell's Jim when you want him!

Easy guys. Open the zip file and drag and drop folders = U-boat, Flotilla and Cfg into the SH3 Commander folder. Bingo and presto.

If you need the latest update patch for SH3 Commander I have it at my FF under JScones. Its the zip not the exe one.

I hope this helps you guys.

Happy hunting.

:rotfl:

I am easy! I was just razzing Jimbuna because he always seems to know these GWX-related things. Your description parallels exactly how I said I did it.

But I still have to agree with Reckall that the instructions seem to say put them all in the CFG folder.

Anyway, thanks for helping clarify.

Thank you for straightening that out. It seems that I may have it incorrectly installed as well. The original instructions are confusing...

There are a number of mods which instruct you to "unzip directly into the ***** folder - usually "main."

In fact it doesn't make any difference how you do it. You can unzip directly into the folder as instructed, or unzip to a separate folder then copy / cut and paste the unzipped material into the designated folder. In both instances, if the folder doesn't already exist, it will be added; if it does, it will be over-written.

So, in this case, you can unzip the three folders directly into the main SH3 Commander folder and over-write the existing ones, or you can unzip elsewhere and cut/copy and paste the three folders into the main SH3 Commander folder from there. The result is exactly the same.

I unzip mods to a separate hard-drive and then copy them to where I want them them. I keep the unzipped mods and delete the .7z, or .zip files. That way I have the original mod and can build up a back-catalogue

Sorry mate....needed some beauty sleep

Anyway, your right in what you responded...and yes I suppose it is kinda confusing :hmm:

I actually install the files a different way (typically)

I install JSGME into the SH3 Commander programme folder and enable all the additional files that way.

My reasoning being that I don't need to back up any files since it's already done for me.

To sum up:

5 separate installations with JSGME in each + 5 SH3 Commander installations again with JSGME in each

You are right - the GWX manual was simply not updated/corrected with the last GWX release.

This is one of the most common SH3Cmdr/GWX-related questions that I receive via email. Fortunately, I now have a standard "you need to contact the GWX team for support" which addresses it nicely.

BTW, Wolfehunter, thanks for continuing to provide active SH3Cmdr support.

Totally off-topic, I know, but what the Hell.....

Good to see you still around, JScones!!
Hope you're now finding the time to actually do some subsimming these days?

I'm still of the opinion that your JSGME and SH3 Commander are THE most important mods ever created for SH3......without them most other Mods would be just too much of a hassle to be bothered with.
It is YOUR 2 little proggies that allow GWX etc to be the successes that they undoubtedly are. Without your input most people would have dropped SH3 a long time ago!

Regards,

Dave H
