Default new video card...?

Thanks for the quick response on my post about mod install order...My parents vid card died & was going to give them mine 6600gt agp. I understand its pretty much the end of the road for agp...but looking at possible upgrades? Does anyone use ati 2600XT, ati 3650, or nvidia 6800xt with Silent Hunter III? Am running dinosaur machine amd 3200xp processor, 1 gig ram, auzentech gold mystic 7 (sound card) & windows xp 32 bit.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks alot.

Hmm, not sure about agp but maybe Geforce 7600GS agp will do the trick?

I'm sure you're right about AGP being at the end of the line. However IMO this was down to the industry deciding they were going to push us into spending out for PCIE rather than any inability of AGP to keep up with most of the current crop of games.
u Tommy is right about about X1950 Pro being a very good card. Had the PowerColor version and it ran SH3 perfectly. It also did the same on Oblivion which is far more demanding than SH3. Unfortunately I cooked it through not cleaning dust out of the case! Tried a 2600XT for a while but the performance seemed worse than with the 1950.
Now I'm on an entry level PCIE system running a 3870. The most I will say about it is that it is as good as my old AGP system but I don't feel it's all that much better.
You do seem to be a bit light on the memory though, another Igb would benefit SH3 enormously.

X1950 Pro is probably the fastest thing you can get for AGP.

7600GS is about as fast as a 6600GT. When I built my PC those are the two cards I looked at and ended up getting the 6600GT.

Ahoy! My specs are below in my sig. I built the unit and am extremely pleased with the graphics - great FPS, no issues and the images and anti-aliasing is superb.

I have looked at many screenies posted and nearly none render as well as my screen shots which tells me a lot of folks are still running older units which will not give the incredible graphic experience this sim offers. (I take into account some folks do not fully understand how to resize images, file types, or work photo programs etc. etc. which creates the jaggies and reduces quality).

Today you really need a new fast rig to enjoy what a sim can provide and to see it is to believe. I think my build took me 3hrs and all parts ordered online on sale.

Good Hunting.
PC

I venture to say my rig built last year is not the finest - but was in my budget.

Hello g3b, I also use a "dinosaur" AMD XP3200+ (2,2GHz, 32bit) system with a NVGA 7800gs (430Mhz/650Mhz) AGP graphic card and the performance on SH3 (with GWX 2.1) is excellent. But keep in mind that 8mb harddisk cache memory and 2gb system memory is recomended to ensure "smooth" gameplay on SH3/4. These days a second hand or even a new AGP "high end" card is very cheap, the same thing counts for 2gb DDR 400 (pc3200) memory. So if you are not interrested to play the latest PC games on full graphic settings then a other strong AGP graphic card + 2gb memory would be your best choise. Greetings, magick.
