Was saddened to just see on the news that Charles Wheeler, the BBC's longest serving foriegn corespondant has died at the age of 85.

Quote:
"To audiences and to his colleagues alike, Charles Wheeler was simply a legend," said BBC Director General Mark Thompson. "His integrity, his authority and his humanity graced the BBC's airwaves over many decades. He is utterly irreplaceable."

Wheeler was born in Germany in 1923 and was a fluent German speaker. He later joined the Royal Marines at the outbreak of WWII and served under cover in Europe. His television career took him all over the world and he served 20 years as the BBC's American correspondant, covering 5 presidential elections.

RIP Charles Wheeler, a great television broadcaster.
