Default Sh3 Commander photos

I got to thinking after this last patrol when i shut down SH3 Commander. I wonder how these U-Boat commanders who's photographs appear in SH3 Commander might feel about that.

Would they be put off to the fact that people play a game using their image?

Would they feel honored?

angry?

what would i feel if 60 years from now, someone were using my image to spur their imagination along while they played some game that was once very real and frightening to me at one point in my life... and maybe even cost me my life?

personally, i would probably think it was really neat as long as it was tasteful and respectful.

who really knows? Im not sure how you guys use SH3 commander, but i have particular photographs in sh3 commander which i attach to particular careers.

So i decided that i should probably learn something about the men whos photographs i had been using frequently. so i pulled up uboat.net and searched through the images until i found them both

first up we have the image of Kapitan Zur See Werner Hartmann, http://www.uboat.net/men/hartmann.htm he completed the third longest u-boat patrol (200 days) once commanded the 2nd flotilla as well as the 27th flotilla, and has a total of 115,337 tons to his credit. He survived the war, and died in 1963, he was 61 years old.

second, we have korvettenkapitan Seigfried Strelow, http://www.uboat.net/men/strelow.htm who started his career on torpedo boats and worked his way up to a light cruiser, he eventually took command of a u-boat gaining just under 60,000 tons. His boat was depth charged while crash diving by a wellington bomber in the north atlantic. the boat sank, all hands lost.

one thing that struck me was how sad some of the images are. Smiling faces younger than my own and i have still a year to round the corner to 30! One u-boat commander assigned to a XXI boat was only 24 years old. Germany surrendered before he receives his first patrol orders. no other information is available on him.

Depends how you see things!

Some might argue that by simply "pretending" (aka playing) to be a sub commander, you ridicule the whole war and those who didn't make it back!

This applies to almost all Sims and war games!

I'd like to think that we Simmers here are holding the torch of remembrance!

Strange, Carl Emmermann got his U-boat front clasp the last of all medals, while my crew seems to get them awarded after only a few patrols

That may be because the U-boat front clasp was not established until May 1944 (Bronze). The silver version followed in November 1944. I recently managed to get hold of a silver replica.

If you use SH3 Commander that will guide you when to award medals etc linked to historical dates.

I think most of them would be happy about the fact there there are still people interested in the boats they sailed, especially in this times where many young people aren't quite interested in the whole thing. Many here do a lot of reading and research about the subject and not only playing the sim.

The photos are widely reproduced so I don't think that it's disrespectful to use them. Maybe some of them might be flattered to get a little recognition after all these years (even if it is only coming from a game). How many people (in & outside of Germany) would know or remember about Engelbert Endrass? He's there in SH3 Cmdr...

I think if those guys could read these forums they would be AMAZED at the amount of respect and honor we hold for them and what they did and went through. Even AMERICANS (and USN vets to boot) showing respect for the job they did would astound them.

I remember waaaay back in the Intel 486 SX/DX CPU days when I bought B-17 flying fortress my grandfather came over (who flew B24's) and looked at it. He was humbled and amazed by the gameplay, as well as the fact that someone would care enough to learn and re-enact what he did during those horrible days.
