Default Miss, miss, miss!!!

Right. I am on my first patrol, and I came across a Jap Freighter, which I sunk.

A Fubuki? Destroyer came after me, but missed with DC's, and after spending some time hiding, I came up to PD and am now about 1,200 yards from her. It is about 22:30, and she is doing 0 knots - just sitting there sucking her thumb...

Now, as this is my first patrol, and have no experience in sinking ships, I saved the game before I fired, so I can load again if I miss. Cheating I know, but I want to get the hang of this (it is a trial career).

I fire 4 torps set to 15ft (draft if 11.5) depth, high speed, and mag-detonate... miss, miss, miss, miss. WTF!

Re-load the game... changed the settings, trying different combinations of depth, detonate type etc - but not a single torp hits.

I have tried depth ranges from 5-15 with different detonation types.

As I am 1,200 yards away, and she is doing 0 knots - my TDC data is spot on as far as I can tell. I have just spent and hour loading the game, firing, loading, firing... what is going on?

I am running stock 1.5 (apart from some cosmetic changes to the game).

Am I really that crap?

R U shooting auto or manual

first off press Q to open your torpedo
tube doors ( select each tube seperately )

then when its time to shoot
unlock your scope move the cross hairs
forward to the bow
(almost but not quite depending on the ship the foremast usually will do)

Fire

if your shooting manually we will need more details.

OK, First of all, a number of questions, and why they are relevant:

1. Are you using mods, and are they up to date? I was using an older iteration of RFB and didn't keep it up to date and I had a problem where the torps would just steer left after leaving the sub.
2. Are you firing auto or manual? There is obviously a difference in what you need to do between the two.

Now, may i suggest the you fire manually, by pointing your sub directly at the target ship, then set the range to whatever value you feel like, directly through the right side, set speed to 0 and AOB to 90 port (doesn't really matter as the speed is 0). Make sure to click the red arrow that sends the settings to the TDC twice at least each time, and also change the range a couple of times, always clicking twice on the red arrow. Your TDC should show the torp leaving your sub at 0 degrees and hitting the ship at a 90 degree angle. Also make sure the PK is off, then open the tube doors and fire. As soon as you do that, hit F11, and follow the torpedos via the external camera, with generous applications of the backspace key (pausing) to allow you to catch up and analyse the shot.

Let us know if this helps. Also, I would like to point you out to Rockin Robbins, most excellent Dick OKane method for shooting manually. It is a beautfully clever yet simple method that allows you to disregard range, and I have been hitting like Michael Jordan in the last minutes of an NBA finals game since I picked up his videos and learned how to do it.

Cheers

Ill bet my bottom dollar your solution was set on her just sitting there....

As soon as she hear the high speed screws WAMMO insta flank... there goes your solution.

Seen it many times... it sucks

in every shot you have to anticipate the weapon being detected
drawing a reaction, experience will give you educated guesses
at what that action will likely be beforehand.

More then likely.

He also said Mag detonators and a depth of 11 something. If he's running a mod, or even the stock game they may simply be sailing underneath especially if its the beginning of the war.

Try aiming at 5 feet or less, high speed, and spread them between 1-3 knots head of the smoke stack. Depending on your range, you may still need the magnetic detonators as they tend to be more reliable for targets that are at less then a 90 degree AOB. When he spots them he will begin turning either hard starboard or port at flank speed to attempt and make himself a smaller target for you, and more then likely he WILL turn towards you. If you can close the distance as much as possible, fire your spread, and dive.

Hi peeps, thanks for the replies.

I set the depth to 5ft and set on mag-det. I aimed more-forward than usual, even though the speed was 0 knots. I got 4/4 hits.

Ok, this patrol was a practice.

The manual says to set the torp depth to draft+5ft or so - this obviously does not seem to work.

I obviously need to get the hang of this manual TDC lark.

I am running the Stock 1.5 game on 100% realism. I have also added extra menu buttons, BP360, and the nomograph.

One of the few things the manual go... well .. almost right. Listen to the advice the folks give here at SubSim and youll do just fine.

On with the theorys...

Draft less a few feet with magnetic detonators will work if everything is just right.

Variables include, the ship bobbing up and down, 12 feet of draft one minute 7 feet the next. Furthermore the draft given is the 'max' draft... is the ship loaded? Is it the same draft at the bow or stern as amidships? Reliability of the magnetic detonator estimated to be about 50 50 . The accuracy of your solution. Finally the weather. Is it choppy? Large swells?

I have made many sucessfull under the keel shots, then again Ive probably missed more than Ive made. Thats why Ill fire 3 or 4 torps at high value targets.

That being said generally Ill set the torpedo shallow, fast, with impact detonators 90% of the time.
