Watch crew having a bad day at the office

On my 4th patrol using GWX2.1 and my watch crew are having some problems spotting aircraft. The weather conditions might have some bearing on this with partial cloud, moderate visibility and and wind speed of 4 metres a second. I am traversing the North Sea towards the Orkneys at TC 128 and have been pounced on by a couple of Ansons. I was only aware of their approach when I heard aircraft engines! Crash dive! Twice this has happened, but luckily I escaped without damage to man or machine. Unless my watch crew get it together, this could be a short patrol.

I was up near the Orkneys stalking a target on the surface in the late afternoon hours when the same thing happened. No word from the watch crew. I heard the airplane myself and crash dived in time. Heard a couple of explosions but that was it.

This was stock SH3 v1.4 , in Dec. '39.

+1 here, happened to me a couple of weeks ago as well

I was somewhere near Orkneys in late '39... Not sure about the month though but the exact same thing happened still, i.e. my watch crew failed to spot an incoming aircraft! I crash-dived, but the bugger managed to bomb with some accuracy nevertheless, and the explosions then lifted my boat back to the surface

When dealing with large planes/bombers the crew would have to rely on sight a lot more than they could their ears. The lower frequency sounds bombers made would drown out into the background noise of the sea, especially in bad/poor weather. Fast single engine planes have such a higher pitch that they're like sirens so could at least be heard easier albeit harder to spot (and with the doppler shift if they could hear but not see its time to crash dive as it'd be pretty close to em). In 39' early 40 there's usually a flat top inside Scapa, found that if you go in and sink it that it noticeably reduces the number of annoying little planes buzzing around.
