Default GWXInstErr.txt?? Help?

Repost from the HUGE GWX 2.1 release thread as I think this will get buried there in a hurry... and I would like an answer (plz ) before I get 3 or 4 patrols in only to find my install is borked and have to re-install and start all over again...

HI GWX team!!! Once again you all have outdone yourselves.

One question (ok maybe 2 questions)... after following the instructions in the first post to a T I noticed a .txt file on my desktop after installing up to GWX2.1...

GWXInstErr.exe.txt In it it says

DEBUG: Test 1 FAILED
DEBUG: Test 2 FAILED Version is
DEBUG: Test 3 FAILED
DEBUG: Test 4 Seems to have PASSED IF Size is not Zero - Size is 0
DEBUG: Test 5 Seems to have PASSED IF Size is not Zero - Size is 0
DEBUG: Test 6 Seems to have PASSED IF Size is not Zero - Size is 0
At least one of the tests failed

Game seems to run fine though.... should I be worried??

That text file comes from the 2.0 installer.
Not the 2.1 installer.

I didn't program the 2.0 installer and don't remember offhand
what the checks were.
I'll do some research and get back here with a better answer.

When you start SH3 do you see the intro movie with the Wolf Howling?
Does the startup screen show Expansion 2.1?

The only way I get that exact error log is to install 2.0
to a blank folder.
Then 2.1 will find that folder and install into it.

When you start SH3 do you see the intro movie with the Wolf Howling? Yes I see the intro movie and the wolf howling no problem
Does the startup screen show Expansion 2.1? Yes I see the Expansion 2.1 when I start the game no problem

And the game is running perfect! I could understand why I got the same error message log as Faamecanic post.

Anybody out there got the same problem

Or shall I shoot the Dog?

Those errors are from the GWX 2.0 installer

Cant find which one is which but basically it wasnt a clean patched install you added GWX 2.0 to

Wierd. I did a SH3 Command rollback, then I undid all mods via JGSME, then did a complete uninstall via CD uninstaller, Wiped out remaining folders (but kept my install folder that I tell the game to install to but it was empty). Reboot. Then I installed SH3 and patch to 1.4b, Reboot. Then I installed GWX2.0 and then GWX2.1.

Dont know how it could get cleaner than that... maybe remanats in my registry?

That is it then.

EVERYTHING must go. There shouldn't be so much as a speck of SH3 prior to reinstalling the game and then GWX on top.

this is the guide I wrote to install GWX 2.1 from dot. It was done for people totally new to it, but even the seasoned subsimmers can do with steering in the right direction now and again.

GWX 2.1 Installation Instructions

GWX 2.1, needs a FRESH SH3 1.4b installation to work. If you already have a fresh
install of SH3 and patched to 1.4b skip straight to step 5 now. If not...

1. Ensure that commander is rolled back, and disable all mods with JSGME

2. Commence uninstall using the game disk.
When it asks to keep the save data, click no.

3. Delete the Silent Hunter III folder in C:programs/ubisoft to remove all traces
Now reboot the computer.
(If SH3 was your only ubisoft game then delete the ubisoft folder in my programs)

4. ReInstall SH3, and then, when installation is done, if you need to... patch it to 1.4
If you require the patch, please visit the SH3 website - when this is done, reboot.

5. Visit the Official GWX Hompage (http://gwx.mysite.orange.co.uk/)
select "Download links" and download the GWX exe and the 7 Bin files and
the GWX 2.1 exe. (if you already have the GWXexe, the 7 bin files and the 2.1 exe saved in
in your PC somewhere, skip to step 7, if not... see step 6)

6. Save the Bin files and the EXE in your computer all together in a folder
"GWX 2" for example. But the 7 Bin files and the exe must be together in
a folder. (Tuck the complete download away for future use)

7. You are now ready. Double click the exe (the wolf paw print) and that will install GWX 2.0
(NOTE: the 2.1 exe is 158mb in size, just in case you can't tell which is which.)

8. To complete the installation of GWX 2.1 double click the 2.1 exe now, this will patch
your installation to 2.1 when the installation is finished that's it, you are ready
to start playing!

SH3 Commander Instructions.

GWX 2.0 is compatible with SH3 commander but you will need to download and install the
special GWX 2.1 cfg files in your SH3 Commander v3.0 (or later version) main folder.
Files available from the GWX homepage...

1. Find your SH3 commander install folder in my programs

2. copy the GWX 2.0 commander files you have downloaded from the Official GWX Hompage
(http://gwx.mysite.orange.co.uk/) into the Cfg folder there

3. Thats it! SH3 commander is now 100% compatible with GWX 2.1

The reason it needs a clean install is there may be problems down the line
Not now but later

If all is running ok now then you may as well run with it as is
IIRC one of the things the 2.0 installer looked for was the Basic cfg size as a few mods change that
TBH I cant remember everything else it looked at for a match

I think the 2.0 installer would allow you to complete the install
even if the checks were bad.
I KNOW the 2.1 will not allow install if it's checks are wrong.
The only bad check I allowed to pass through is the SH3 Commander check.
The reason for that is that Commander can be installed anywhere,
numerous times.
To search that factor out would cause more trouble then it's worth.
I'm kinda hopeing Jscones would agree with my decision to warn you
and then proceed.

Funny I have kept installing all the GWX versions (1.0 and up) with a fresh install into the SH3 folder I make in my D:\GAMES drive (I dont install anything but MS Office to my C: drive). I even had 2.0 installed prior, with the same folder, and didnt get this error last time.

Guess if I run into problems I will Uninstall all (to include my folder I install SH3 to). But so far into partrol 3 and all is well...

Thanks for the help all...

It can be done, but at the end of the day, you can only lead a horse to water...

With the earlier installers (pre GWX 2.0) I handled the issue of SH3Cmdr through heuristics (similar to virus scanners). It ended up being pretty accurate at determining whether SH3Cmdr modifications had been made to the selected SH3 installation, but (similar to virus scanners) was still not foolproof.

Personnally, I have no problem with a "tough love" approach. The SH3Cmdr User Guide warns about rolling back first, hundreds of posts here warn about rolling back first. the installer warns about rolling back first...

You can lead a horse to water...
