Default Trouble harbor raiding

Hi all, I'm pretty new here, so if this is a topic that has been dealt with before, please point me to that thread, though I spent some time searching for it and haven't been able to find the specific issue I'm having. I've recently started trying to do some harbor raiding, which would be fun except that every time I spend the several hours (game time, but still quite a while even with TC) to get myself into the port, most of the larger ships are already either sinking or already sunk. I've experienced nothing but heavy to severe sea states over the last few attempts so that might have something to do with it, but whatever the case, I really end up just wasting 2-3 hours of my time trying to get to ships that I can't sink anymore anyway. Does anyone have any advice on how to stop this? I'm using GWX 2.1 with SH3 Commander (which I have the seasonal waves option set, so that may be the case as its winter of 1939 currently). I'd just like to be able to sneak into a harbor and know that I'll at least get the satisfaction of sinking something worthwhile. Thanks, Greg

Best advice is to stay out of harbours in bad weather. You run the risk of broaching your conning tower and giving away the surprise. Wait until the weather improves before entering the harbour and you should see fewer self sinking ships. Unfortunately SH3 ships have a natural drift which is worsened with heavy seas and they tend to smash themselves against the wharves or each other if they are close enough.

TarJak's tutorial is outstanding - following his advice should keep you out of trouble!
If you're after a specific harbour then there is advice at:

You should follow TarJak's advise.
I'm gonna do that, because once in GWX 2.1 I decided to raid scapa flow,
the weather was terrible and all I've managed to sink was a floating dock

Thanks, I'll definatly read that tutorial, I'd already found that second thread which is what gave me the idea in the first place... hunting a few merchants here or there or a convoy is one thing, but the prospect of bagging over 100kT of hardware in one go sounds too fun to pass up.

Thanks again for the advice,
Greg

So whats the tonnage on one of those

Before the war got started in August 1939 I cruised into Portland and parked in the middle of the harbor. I waited there for half a day then dropped to periscope depth, plotted my attack, and waited for the war to start. At 0:01 on Sept 3, 1939 the Tommy's lost 11 ships. I've attached a detail list below:

0004 Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! HMS Delight (C&D classes), 1375 tons
0009 Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! HMS Cape Argona (ASW Trawler), 1100 tons
0032
Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! S.S. Lehigh (Small Merchant), 2409 tons
0039
Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! S.S. Gro (Tramp Steamer), 1996 tons
0041
Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! M/V Glenwood (Medium Cargo), 5013 tons
0104
Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! S.S. Corinthic (Tramp Steamer), 1993 tons
0107
Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! M/V Cecilia J. Brown (Tugboat), 1133 tons
0112
Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! S.S. Hurricane (Small Merchant), 2407 tons
0124 Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! M/V Petronella (Motor Vessel), 114 tons
0216 Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! S.S. Rolette (Large Merchant), 10420 tons
1315
Grid BF 31 Ship sunk! M/V Vision (Tugboat), 1123 tons

Please note, this was definetly done in relativly calm weather.
