Vista problem

1. I installed SH3.(outside of Program Files as gwx manual suggests).
2. Patched to 1.4b (run as adminstrator).
3. Updated starforce successfully.
4.rebooted pc.
5. tried to run the game before installing gwx2.1 and I get an error "Can not initialise 3D Engine".

Any ideas?

I got Vista Ultimate 32bit SP1.

My gear:
Ati 1800xt 512ram
2gb ram ddr
amd athlon x2 4200+

P.S. even with gwx2.1 the same thing happens

I think what you meant to say was "Starforce Problem"

I didn't even make an attempt at Starforce under Vista. I just plunked down $20 for the D2D version and...

1) avoided all problems related to trying to get SF to work on Vista
2) I can now run SH3 + GWX without the disk
3) spared my optical drives the punishment (or destruction

)

I'm running it happily under Vista 64 Ultimate with the hi-res DLL in 1680x1050 (screen's a little squashed though).

The D2D is indeed the best fix for any Vista (32 or 64) problems. Rather than agonize over configurations or what not 20 bucks and you're all done.
