Light fog is this Captain's best friend!
I run TMO and RSRDC for 1.5 - and let me tell ya - light fog is the greatest thing for a Captain to have. With it, I can spot a target at 1500-2000 yards, though I can't "lock" it until its about 1200. However, escorts can't see me either! If its dark its even better!
When running into a convoy that is widely spaced, its entirely possible to relive a historical "night surface attack" - running at high speed into and out of a convoy, using the ships themselves to aid in your escape. With the reduced visual spotting range the ships have, its ok if I get spotted by a single ship - it gets sunk and the escorts all come running. By the time they get there - they get another report of me being spotted somewhere else, and another ship goes boom! When I see they are finally getting too close, I can disappear on the surface at high speed and then reattack from another angle. Simply put - I LOVE LIGHT FOG!!!! Just thought I would share that. ![]()
