Wanted: Photography/Camera Advice.

When I was younger I enjoyed a bit of photography (35mm SLR Olympus OM10 with manual adaptor, a variety of lens ranging from 28mm wide anle to 300mm zoom, tripod etc).

I still have my old equipment but now feel the urge to get a mid range digital, capable of taking holiday snaps, but nothing too serious.

I'd appreciate anyones feedback/opinion on the cameras below.

If I where you I would do some research on the products at there site forums. Go to there forums if they have them and read up on the models. Try to find the good and the bad. See what others have already written this way your no wasting your hard earned money. Specs are nice but the models may not be good.

I don't use a high quality digital camera. I still prefer my old Minolta 35mm STsi 404si with 28-80 AF lens.

Personally I'd be looking for a DSLR something like the Canon D400 or the Olympus E400:

It'll cost a bit more but gives a better platform than the ones you were looking at. IIRC Olympus has interoperability between it's digital and film lenses so you should still be able to use the old lenses you have.

I have an older Fuji S model, the 6000. I find it to be very intuitive and takes excellent pictures. Good sensor usable even at high ISOs up to 1600. Assuming the 8000 has any advancements it would come highly recommended.

I have a dSLR (Canon EOS 400D), which I love, but I've heard good things about Canon's high-end compact cameras. I'm not sure of the model names, but they're usually something like 'Digital Ixus XXX IS' or something like that. If you're in the US, replace 'Ixus' with 'Elph'.

Buying a dSLR will give you greatly improved image quality and more flexibility, but you can't just put one in your pocket and go out for the night...if you want a camera for holiday snaps, I'd get a compact.

I recently bought a fujifilm SLR-like midrange. It is the Fuji Finepix S700. I couldn't be happier. My parents gave me their hand-me-down 35mm Canon SLR a while back and I needed a new digital to get into the digital age. Every day I passed this camera at work (I work at a dept. store) and eyed it. I finally caved, tried it out, read online reviews, and bought it. I really felt that I got the best "bang for my buck" out of this one.

So naturally, I'm going to suggest the Fuji. I did look into the S8000 and it looks awesome! I didn't need anything more than 8mp, and I really didn't want to pay for shipping (or skip my employee discount at work) so I didn't get it. Fuji is quite possibly the best brand for mid-range shoppers. Everything else is highly overpriced. My sister and my girlfriend both bought Sony's Cybershot Cameras, both 7MP and payed about $250; while I only payed $199. I have to agree with Fatty, the Finepix series is very intuitive, it takes great pictures even when you aren't setting your own f-stops, aperture, and film speed.

In short: go for the fuji!

Try visit also www.dpreview.com Personally I've got Canon PowerShot Pro1 but looking forward to upgrade to Nikon F80. I wouldn't prefer Canon DSLRs because I cannot afford myself expensive L-series optics (my Pro1 has one built-in) and in middle-class optics Nikons are better as most whom I've heard say.

I have a Canon Powershot G2 - my first digital camera bought in 2002. These days, I mainly use a Nikon D50 digital SLR.

The first thing you need to decide, given you have past photography experience, is whether you want a point-n-shoot or a dSLR. I got my Nikon mainly because I had done many years of shooting with my other 35mm SLRs, and I found the Canon was just not what I really wanted in a digital camera. It's still a great camera, and I still have fun with it at times, but I would not want to be without my dSLR most of the time.
