Default cannot install

i had sh3 running ok a week or more ago with no problem on XP.
one day i inserted the disk then had to go answer the phone, when i came back the system had locked up. i couldn't even get the cd drive to spin up.
i've since re installed XP, still no luck (the cd drive works ok).
all i get is
Error 1335. the cabinet file 'data1.cab' required for this installation is corrupt & cannot be used. this could indicate a network error,an error reading from the cd-rom, or a problem with this package.
i've since bought another SH3 & re installed XP again still the same message.
rome total war won't install nor any other game.
any ideas?
thanks for reading.
