Hello everybody, i started playing SH3 some days ago and began reading here at subsim. So first thing i want to say: It´s simply incredible, what a dedicated community can achieve
![]() I have one question about sonar/Hydrophon and it would be great, if you could help me. Let´s say, i have got three different targets, a small tanker bearing 000 at 200m, a big tanker bearing 090 at 400m and one other bearing 180 at 800m. If i understand it right, i can order my sonar guy to give me constant information about the nearest target. But how can i change this to give me information about the big tanker more far away? More generally, how can i order sonar or my watch officer to keep track of a specific ship, but not always the nearest ship? thank you and have a nice weekend, Tysar |

WELCOME ABOARD!
![]() I could be wrong, but I don't think you can do that. Nearest Ship, Nearest Warship and Normal Sweep are, I think, your only options. You could man the hydrophones yourself, but that is also unrealistic, as well as making it pretty much impossible to actually plan an attack at the same time.

Welcome aboard Kaleun Tysar.....the only way you will be able to keep track is by plotting the target of your choice at regular periodic intervals on the nav map with your pencil, obviously using the periscope (very carefully) would aid in making your course positioning much more accurate than generalised guestimates on the hydrophone (much more accurate for direction as opposed to distance)

My sonar guy is a transfer form the Russian front where his job was to put his ear on the largest canon as it fired and report if he heard any strange noises.
To get the job he had to pass an IQ test: if he had any, he failed. On top of that he is the base commander's brother-in-law.

Welcome.
Treat him like Bernard and load him into your aft tube. If you can't find something in Subsim try the below link for interesting stuff from Subsim modders and forum members. Führen Sie schweigt und tief. Viel Glück Commander. http://silent-hunter-addict.com

This is one of the most frustrating stock limitations... I've always wanted that one changed. Fact is that you can't even get closest merchant! Just closest ship or warship... what if they're one in the same!
This game is about 2 patches from being perfect (as a base for other mega community mods :p ). |

Thank you for your answers!
Well, due to massive problems with manual targeting my torpedos are not a very big thread at this moment, so i could put the sonar guy in a tube as well ![]() Regards, Tysar |

I suppose if you looked through the periscope you could tell him to follow the contact currently on bearing 324, but even then if it's a convoy he could easily get the one on 325 and neither of you would ever know the difference.
