Default Help me fix the missing officer bug!

I must be the luckiest player alive. No matter what I do, I cannot replicate the "lost" repair officer problem that so many here have complained about. And I've spent the last three hours trying!

Without replicating it, I can't fix it.

I have verified that immediately after docking, the repair officer is written to CREW_NUMBER_11 with a NrComp of 11. If the player then either a) exits the career, or b) re-opens the crew screen, the repair officer is moved from the #11 slot to the earliest free slot. No probs understanding this concept.

But here's the problem. For me, he's always moved correctly; that is, he always ends up in a "visible" spot the next time I load SH3. But obviously this isn't always the case - there must be some event that interferes and causes the officer to go wayward.

I have some theories, but without seeing the problem "live", I can't test them.

So, can I ask that if you experience this problem that you pls post the contents of your latest Crew_Career_x0.cfg file (just up to and including [CREW_MEMBER_12] will do) with a brief explanation of where all your officers were just prior to docking, the boat type you are in, and anything else that may help.

With this info I can build a fix into SH3Cmdr - which happily recognises the crewman - to reposition the wayward sailor in a visible slot.

Default funny

Funny you mention this problem...I hadn't even heard of it before and by coincidence it happened to me just yesterday!

I lost my Chief/repair officer.

I have no idea what happened or why it happened ...all I know is I'm down to just 4 officers and the game won't let me add one back. :hmm:

If you mean that if you put a officer in the repair compartment and he is gone after save reload? Then I have seen that after mission end (base save) not (yet) at a sea save. I have modded my crew so I can have 8 officers on a VII but I have only try to have this seven officers crew inside can't get the officer to be in the repair compartment from beginning:hmm: But I am not a modder So.. anyway here are my crew from 1 to 12.

There are all in the u-boot but you have to edit basic cfg before going out to sea with them
Hope that It will help you a little bit looking foreward to 2.8 sure it will be a most just like 2.7 is

Ugh. I wished you had asked just last week. --wry grin-- As I'd spent three hours trying to fix that. I did exactly what people had said to do in threads: edit the crew position numbers, ect ect ect to get the 'missing' officer back out of limbo but it didn't work. I wound up restarting things two patrols back just to get him to reappear.

Tell ya what: I'll experient some the next coupla days and see if I can get that to replicate again. If I manage it I'll let you know.

Real quick though: was this ever a problem before people used Commander? Only reason I'm asking is to start trying to figger out variables, and one of them is is whether mixed-starting might be part of it.

This is a most irritating bug, all the luck in the world to those who try to solve it!

Well I never seen the bug in a save at sea. But I try if I have to save to check that no crew is in the repair compartment. But if not then He just go with the crew to a compartment never lost:hmm: . But I have seen it at harbor after mission. I been thinking it can be something to do with that in the picture that is in the log of your u-boat where you promote crew, do not have the repair crew compartment as in the other crew/u-boat management screen. And basic the game somehow forget to put him back, since he do go there at your will and not the game, since if you right click to move your repair crew then he do not move from or to repair compartment, like the pettyofficer that have a repair qualification.

I remember back in 2005 someone here uncovered a problem with the fatigue modelling. I can't recall the fine details, but I know it was some problem between compartment 1 (radio room) and compartment 11 (repair), seemingly an internal bug of some type.

I am betting that this problem is somehow related, and could be put down to something as simple as internal confusion between the 11 and 1. This sounds funny, but as anyone who has tried to mod the torpedoes knows, any torpedo in slot 11 is ignored and the torpedo from slot 1 is used instead.

Anyway, if I manually tweak the crew files, I can force the problem that you guys are getting, but that doesn't really help.

As someone said back in mid-2005, it certainly looks like that originally there was to be an officer slot in compartment 1, but at some stage it was removed, but the associated assumptions were not corrected.

I'm not out to fix that, just provide a way to get the wayward man back.

@Nightshadow: Are you saying that your file snippet is taken immediately after an officer goes MIA? With no-one in slot 11, it doesn't look like it (at worst there should be crew details even if NrComp=-1). I really want to see crew extracts taken immediately after noticing the officer is gone.

I tried to lose the officer. I left him in the repair room and on reload he was in the engine room. My boat was a thpe IIA, and the date was Sept 39.
I have never experienced this bug, but I usually try to make sure that my repir room is empty on return to base.
I'll try again tonight with a typeVIIB.

I wasn't even aware of this SHIII bug since I have the habit of moving men from the damage control station when there is no damage to repair and I have never saved or entered port with men in the damage control station. At least it can be prevented.

Default Bug

Can't reproduce it with VIIB in '43.

Yeah, I agree, it's a problem that's very easy to avoid, but it has got me curious, especially as I cannot replicate it.

If the fix is as simple as shifting some crewmen details from one slot to another, I'm happy to do it. However, if *I* can't replicate the problem, well, there's nothing to fix.

I think I'm gonna have to agree with you there. There's been no insight, no leads, no hard evidence.

Thus, no problem.

I won't expend any more time on the issue.
