HI folks,
Just curious - usually when I skink something, the red wreck image appears on the nav map. I've noticed on some occsations this does not always happen. last night I was in Lock Ewe in foul weather and sank HMS Prince of Wales (35000 tons ![]() My WO anounced they were sinking ( and I confirmed this via scope), but no red wreck image appeared on the map. I did get credit for the sinkings, so does shallow water play a part as to whether the game engine recognises a wreck in the nav map? Also, on another patrol, I was west of Ireland, also in foul weather and heavy fog when I engaged a convoy - one torp hit a merchant which sank 10 minutes later, but the GREY wreck icon appeared on the nav map, aid I didn't get credit for the sinking. The merchant was slipping in and out of visibility (due to fog) between me firing the torp and the target sinking. Is there a lesson to be learned here? Do I need to keep within visual or a particular distance to earn credit for a sinking? Thanks for any insights. By the way, thanks to all who made GWX 2.0 possible, the last few weeks has seen me test how much sleep deprivation I can tolerate (late night patrols, you know)! ![]() Thaum |

I've noticed in the past that BVR kills in fog or heavy weather will display as gray markings rather than red if map updates are on. Not sure if this was changed in GWX2 though. :hmm:

The Grey wreck mark is the AI's indication that, as far as the game is concerned, the vessel sank from causes other then those inflicted on it by you. In other words, the final, ultimate cause of it's sinking was weather and such, and not your hits on it. Thus you get no credit for the sinking.
The no wreck symbol at all seems a bug to me, and seems to occur most often in shallow water. I've seen it in fjords during the Norway campaign, and, using the God Camera, I've gone back and seen that much of the wreck is indeed still sticking out of the water (even though the keel is on the bottom).

For the shallow water bug, my thought is the game probably doesn't plot a sunken ship unless the 3D model disappears. I think for some shallow sinkings the 3D model never trips the test to make itself disappear. But then again, I seem to recall that sunken ship mark appearing even before a ship sinks. Hmmm...

Reminds me of a time when I thought I had the perfect method for sneaking thru the channel. I was cruising past the heavily patrolled entrance right under a loud-prop French fishing trawler. It was the perfect plan ...until the stupid thing sank on top of me due to wave action. I noticed the grey sunken ship suddenly appeared on the map right on top of me, and I had to go see what happened. |

I've sunk several ships and gotten grey or no mark whatsoever on the map.. this not only in shallow areas but pretty much anywhere. A lot of times, the map makes no mark when I have the periscope down, I'm submerged, and I don't actually "SEE" the wreck when the crew says that it's sinking. I will usually get no applause or the "YAY !!! SHE'S SINKING" from the crew. Just the announcement at the bottom of the screen. Even though it's not marked on the map, I've been getting credit for the kills.
Hope this puts you a little at ease.

Same as Blacklight mentioned, I usually have my scope down when this seems too occur.

i was wondering- i play gwx 2.0 with no map contact updates - i'm happy about the uncertainty, but i still would like to see my sinkings plotted. Anyone know how to achieve this without full map contact updates?

It could be that unless you visually inspect the sinking, there's no mark made on the map for some reason.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
It's certainly true that when no wreck/grey wreck icons have appeared, I've had the scope down for a lot of time. Thaum |
