Hello, I hate to ask what might be a trivial question but.. in SH3Commander is it better to use the randomise crew names & experiences or should I just leave it as it is? I'm kinda trying to get an idea as to what the general favourite choice is.
I thought that, as I'm starting at the beginning i.e. Sept 1939 I should generally start with a new crew, first time out type of thing and not have some new and some experienced crewmen, actually they wouldn't really be experienced as the war has just started ![]() Apologies for my ignorance if I've missed the point hehe.. still feeling my way into the realistic side of this great sub sim. Best wishes, Gen |

I understand what you are saying, but one can have experient crew members, even if the war is starting, because u-boat training and missions also happen before the war (lack of english words, and how to put in english my line of thoughts,so sorry about that, but one can know what I'm trying to say

I use both options and really like them (thanks JSCones!).
A to experienced sailors, in fact you would be more likely to get them early in the war than later, for numerous reasons. These men were long trained and gained experience doing reconessaince missions and so on even before the war, they know their boats and it's only lack of BATTLE experience they suffer. Later in the war much more people were involved and put into a U-Boot after relatively short training. They were often skilled surface sailors, but doing your freighter job doesn't let you gain all the experience you need when on U-Boot, I suppose. As to names - absolutely randomise them! If you don;t, your crew members will have the same names in every campaign you start in a given boat type. :rotfl:

And don't forget, some crewmen served during the Spanish Civil War.
Randomising the crew names gives you over 1.7 billion crew name combinations (based on almost every Commander and crewman to serve in a U-boat during WWII). No more repetitive names. When randomising the experience, SH3Cmdr undertakes a number of calculations based on the year and attempts to reflect RL conditions as documented. By this I mean basically what AvM stated in his post. You'll get less experienced crew during 1939, increasing upwards to 1943, then decreasing over the last two years. Anyway, the main parameters are contained "SH3 options.cfg". Feel free to edit the values under "[CREW SETUP]" to suit your tastes. ![]() |

No, but can you imagine the advetures of such a crew? Would they even be able to leave port without crashing?

Would be interesting to watch from the quayside as they attempted to steer out of the harbour, pranging every ship as they go.
In other news... I've been looking at the SH3Gen mod. Looks rather good, I noticed a few sub drivers using that one in addition with the others. ![]() Oh... P.S.: Spotted a thread about best submarine film and saw something about an uncut 5hour version of Das Boot. I've seen one called Das Boot - The Mini Series and it says its about 5 hours long and is the original version. Just want to confirm that its that one? Thanks. I'll admit I've not seen Das Boot yet.. but I will I promise ![]() |
