Hey guys,
I'll be in San Fran for work this weekend, i'll have a lot of free time there saturday into monday morning. (aside from the super bowl) It looks like there is a Maritime Park there where the USS Pampanito is. does anyone have any recommendations, or have been there before?

You're asking a lot of sailors about the best thing to do in San Francisco?

Pampanito is one of the best condition fleet boats afloat. They even have their SJ-1 radar and TDC working.

I was out there this last September and toured the Pampanito (again) - definitely one you must not miss. The Jeremiah O'Brien (Liberty ship) is tied up next to the Pampanito and is also a great tour. They still take her to sea regularly and the crew are fun to talk to while you're touring. There are a lot of great seafood restaurants in the Fisherman's Wharf area and if you need to take something back for those at home there are also a lot of very cheap souvenier stores with nice shirts, T-shirts, caps, etc. You can spend a very pleasant day down there - in fact, I spent two days there and have been a tourist there a couple of times before............Jim

Also bring a sweater, or rain jacket. They make a killing on tourist thinking that San Francisco is Sunny California . . . HA!
Take it from a former local, bring clothes for cool (40/50s F) and wet weather. And the Pompano is a great toor . . . off pier 45 I think, closer to the actual Fishermans Warf, not that cheap Pier 39 tourist trap. Oh, and if you aren't from California, do something like go to In&Out Burger or Sees Candy.

Freedom of Speech in The Bay Area is fine and dandy if you tow the liberal line. But least you say something of an opposing opinion, and one should expect to be attacked, slandered, and that speech labelled hate speech (and thus supported to be banned). But enough about bashing the politics of The Bay Area. It's a wonderful place to visit, and some of the suburb cities are great places to live. There plenty of nice, off the beaten track places that someone can get lost in for hours/days.

I look forward to see how the years have treated her, I haven't been aboard her in over a decade now. Quote:

Guys the Pampantino is the HOLY GRAIL of fleet boats!!
i'll link to the pictures once i get them uploaded to my photo account after i fly home tomorrow. I went through the boat 3 times spent around 4 hours on her. She is in sea worthy condition!! Truly amazing. Especially after seeing this boat since seeing the Torsk. I took around 200 pictures, i'll put a handful of the best ones up. Today there were high winds, i was surprised how much the boat was rocking just sitting at the pier. I think i may have misjudged how stable these boats where. Just tied up in the high winds i think it may have been rolling 3 degrees or so side to side in pretty short periods while tied up. It made me wonder how she must have felt in heavy seas. Thanks to all that mentioned this is a must see. I spent 12 hours out on the town today, about 5 of which were at pier 45. This city has so much charm and history. And coming from someone who truly loves home, and travels the globe for work, that says a lot ![]() talk to you guys when i get the pictures up ![]()
