Multi-Mod install questions

I got the game yesterday.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I wish to be clear about some of the mods before
wholesale installs and then weeping and gnashing

Am I right saying:

TM and RFB are mods addressing gameplay and the AI
and would be the 2 major headings for multi-game installs?

And all the rest; RSRD, ROW and such deal with graphics?
And would be added to each of the above.

The term layer refers to..?
