Default Deck gun hitting way off target

Getting back to SH4 after a break (good to be back)

Playing patch 1.4 with Trigger Maru Mod

Every once in a while, seemingly independent of our relative speed, my deck gun's shells impact nowhere near where I am aiming.

Target was <900 yards with a speed of 6 knots. I was matching 6 knots along side.

I had my gun scope at the first zoom (low power) I had to put the centerline of the ship at the extreme edge of my scope viewfield in order to hit the ship.

Does this sound right?

Naturally, I realize that there will be a need to "lead" the target with the guns but to that extreme?

What is even more strange is that other times my shells hit very near the aim point.

What am I doing wrong?

Nooblet minds want to know

It's a bug. Happens intermittently. Haven't figured out what triggers it though...

Good to know it is a bug and not just my usual Head up my .... uh.. well a mistake on my part.

Is there any work around? I don't think I can save and load in combat can I?

I have noticed that most of my deck gun boresighting errors come when I am at the gun and the front of the submarine bow dips below the waves, even if only for a moment.

I think this is due to the game "locking" the deck gun once its under water, but if you are in the process of moving the mouse, the aimpoint and the azimuth are now off. Even a one degree difference makes it difficult to hit anything at range.

I have found that reloading a save game resets the boresight most time.

Aiming for you AND the AI gun crew is much more accurate when shooting accross your own bow or stern (for rear guns.) The less aspect the better. If it means slowing to a crawl or backing up to keep from closing on the target too much then that's what you need to do. There is an added bebfit in it makes any gunning the AI does AT YOU less accurate because you have a low profile. This is another reason I prefer the forward deck gun. It's more like shooting guns in a WWII flight sim.

I think the problem is carried over from SHIII. I had the same gun problem with III & IV. It happens occassionaly and is usually solved by a save and reload. After, of course getting to a spot with no enemies nearby and I can run on the surface. Never could pin down the cause. But Gruntington's hypothesis is a good one.

i think the problem is the waves

the deck gun sight seems to be stabilised
but not the actual deck gun

thus when a wave comes even though you are still aiming the shot goes way off

im not sure if im referring to the same problem you are

but this seems to be a problem that im encountering wihc could be the same

next time look trough the sights and you should see the boat rocking while your sight is just sitting there

adjust your sight for the distance, in zoom mode drag your mouse up or down to change distance, left of the scope is a scale...

All good advice, I'm sure.... but there is a bug here. Sometimes you just have to aim way right (or whatever) to hit because the gun sight got messed up somehow (read post 4 above for the best explanation I've heard yet)... and it won't work right until you reload the save.

Actually I'm not so sure it's a bug as much as maybe a misunderstood "activity"/command.

I usually find that my deck guns starts shooting off center if I roll my mouse wheel prior to clicking for the gun activity/scope screen.

Getting out of scope view and re rolling the mouse wheel seems to redirect the aiming to some degree. Or so it seems to me.

Anyone with more time and patience is welcome to try this.
