Default SH3 player about to receive the Col. Ed. of SH4 any tips?

Hello fellow sub'ers!

I have played SH3 for quite a while and after a (rather long) break I wandered on these forums again, only to find that a lot of good has come for Sh3 and her Kaleuns! I have downloaded the excellent GWX 2 mod and enjoying it very much so far.

However, I also found a nice deal on leftover Collector's Editions of SH4 and went ahead and ordered myself a copy. It should be arriving any day now, so I am waiting in anticipation!

Do you have any tips on how to get up to speed in the Pacific once it arrives?
Also, is there still multiplayer activity going on(for both titles)?

Thanks in advance!

Bump

I would answer some of it, but gotta go for a bit. I will say though start with this, it is nicely done:

Others will be by to add more. SH4 is a great game, getting better by the day

One other thing, search the threads for older questions of the same, might be stuff in there as well.

One of the biggest adjustments I had to make was in terms of patrol objectives. Gone are the days of "Patrol Grid AM52 for 24 hours" and then go off on your own. They've really improved this aspect of the game. Complete your objective and radio in a status report and you'll get a new one. Keep completing them as long as fuel and torpedoes hold out. When you're ready to go home, stop sending status reports and hit the barn. Completing these objectives doesn't just earn you extra renown, it keeps your career going and you earn better medals for completing more objectives.

I would add to first patch to 1.4 which is the latest patch. There are a bunch of 1.4 compatable mods for making this game the finest around such as T.M. 1.7.5, Run Silent Run Deep Campaign, Real Fleet Boat, Reflections On Water/Dave, and many others. This all depends on what type of gaming expierience your looking for and your expierience in subwarfare. This is a fantastic forum with a great bunch of people so when you get the game ask here your questions and a fine bunch of mates will help you get started.

Thanks guys!

No mods for me at this time, because I first want to see the 'vanilla' SH4. Otherwise I won't even know what the mods improve!

Thanks for the pointer to the thread!

I am sure questions will follow.

Good point.

You might also want to check out a book called Silent Victory. It's a big read at over 850 pages, but it gives you an idea of what is going on in the pacific submarine war.

It provided me with a new perspective on the game and makes what is going on more interesting as i know more of the history.... er i'm rambling

It's a good read

This was the first book on submarine warfare I ever read twenty odd
years ago and it sold me, it read better than fiction.

Defragment your fixed disk. Make sure you have some free space on the drive for swapfiles AFTER installation.

Get your registry in order.

Install the game, reboot, install the patch, reboot, enjoy

Then try some mods. Make sure the game is stable before applying mods.
