My romance and SH4 v GWX 2.0

As a regular lurker on these forums, I see there's much discussion and praise for the latest GWX for SH3.

I remember installing Grey Wolves long ago to SH3 and many a great campaign I enjoyed.

However, for most of this year I've been using only SH4 (with various mods).

There's something missing, and I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps it is the lack of a German crew shouting ALARM!! when we crash dive. Perhaps its the lack of my imagining being in Das Boot - not relevant in the Pacific!

Anyway, I remember first installing SH4 and being impressed with the graphics. Her poor older sister was removed from my hard drive because our romance had ended.

News of GWX 2.0 being available is making me get all nostalgic, and I'm beginning to regret ending my fling with SH3.

So, could we pick up from where we left off, or is there no going back?

How does SH3 with GWX 2.0 compare to SH4? I appreciate different mods create different flavours, and thanks to all the selfless modders who make it possible.

At the risk of sounding chauvanistic, is it like comparing your current girlfriend with an ex?

Perhaps if my ex lost a few pounds, had a boob job, bum job, facial surgery, treatment for halitosis, teeth straightened, a brain transplant, and wore a sexy new dress I would be tempted!?

If truth be known, in SH4 I spend most of my time working with the map view, and pop up the scope just to get the info I need - I seldom feel the need to drool over fancy graphics these days using the fancy camera view.

Would a return to a U-boat with GWX 2.0 be a good thing? Would I offend the younger and better looking younger sister?

Would/should GWX 2.0 enable me to rekindle my romance with SH3?

Thaum.

Hello, thaum! I reccomend going to the SH3-section with these kind of questions, since you will probably only get angry replies here.

I play both, and going by posts here and in the SHIII forum, so do a lot of people. I never delete any game from my HD unless I need the space (and even then, I'd probably just buy another HD and slap it in), or it ceases to run properly.

SHIII and SHIV are different, but certainly not mutually exclusive. To be honest, I don't even understand this kind of post/question about a game. Especially from someone who has played both, so knows exactly what each has to offer.

As for GWX2, how will you know if you like it and enjoy the experience, unless you load it up and take a boat out on a patrol or two (or many)? Certainly not from anyone's opinion posted here - you'd have to experience it yourself to truly know. And if you really dislike it, a mouse click or two and it's gone again. Nothing ventured, nothing gained (and with nothing to lose but a bit of time, why even pose the question? - just go ahead and see for yourself)

It depends on your tastes only, mate... I hope you don't think that you'll not be accepted any more at the SH3 forum cause you switched to SH4 a few months ago, cause it's definitely not the case. You can join us whenever you want !

Personally, I recommend both. I haven't tried GWX 2.0 yet (I've been working some on sh4 ideas) but I look forward to seeing what the GWX team has created. They do D*** Fine Work !

Take into consideration though: SH3 has been around longer so the modders have had more time to really learn the ins and outs of how to tweak it. Modders for SH4 are still trying to get a handle on the same principles--and what worked for modding 3 doesn't always carry over into 4. So--SH4 will get better.

Pacific or Atlantic? Well--if I could get away with having 2 attractive women in my life, firing up whenever I double clicked them, I'd be all for it :hmm:. In the meantime, I'll settle for SH3 and SH4.

Cheers!

Regularily playing both here as well, but to be honest it's sometimes quite hard to go back to SH3. Even with all the modding effor(pity they can't change the gfx engine) it still looks so ugly compared to SH4

Same here, I actually still have 3 installs of SH3 going. I know I am nuts. Gonna go down to just one here real soon, I promise.

I think that comparing the two graphically is really not fair by any terms and for all the obvious reasons. SH3 is not going to fair well against SH4 with all the latest enhancements.

I enjoy both of these sims tremendously. They both have a lot to offer. SH3 plus GWX 2.0 is a formidable package! It will be on my hard drive for a long time to come.

I think that both products compliment each other rather well and offer a unique contrast into how far development and modding can go.

I just find it hard to critisize either of these sims, they are just to much fun!

Call me a Zealot, go ahead I dont mind!

I play both, too. I much prefer the Atlantic, but SH4 has (IMO) reached a point where it's "competitive" with the SH3+GWX experience, all things considered. With a few mods, the core gameplay of SH4 is strong and I switch off between each game depending on my mood.

Hmmmmm......I see no angry replies. Play them both! Sometimes I want to go play SH3 for that no hope of winning the war but hoping just to survive patrol feeling you get with SH3.

If your a hardcore sub simmer, It really all depends on what theater your into. If you just enjoy sub sims in general, it comes down to a techincal examination of pro's and cons between the two games.

Of course you can go back. Nothing wrong with taking a break from one subsim and playing another.

Well, Stabiz, we often find that some folks have bad days. Things happen, flames start. All get over it in a day or so.

I wish I could have the time to switch back and forth. What time I do have I play SH4.

i like play games in seasons...when i´m tired from one , i switch to another.
also sh3 is the only atlantic campaign scenario for now and is a must have in my hard disk .

sh4 enviroment graphics are different compared with sh3 but both have a good level of eye candy.
