Default How long do you patrol and stay home for?

When your only focusing on one patrol from day one to the last day you survive what is your normal patrol/leave time?

I always try to stay out for 30 days...a month or so at least. And then stay in port for 30 days aswell so a month out a month in. This question is mainly for sh3 commander captains mostly considering you can control your leave time.

I've had patrols out of willie as short as 2 weeks, and as long as 33 days. As for time in port, I stay as long as dictated by SH3 Commanders randomised days in base. It works for me, If i have to turn around after 10 days leave i imagine its because a boat covering a vital point has been sunk, or something like that,

Depends on amount of fuel left and torpedos. In port, time determined by amount of damage/upgrades.

Patrol either until out of eels, or down to RTB fuel levels. In base, I spend one month (30 days) for refit.

On occasion, even when out of torpedo's, I have continued on (fuel permitting) if there is an opportunity to sail somewhere interesting that I've never been to (eg. Cape Horn and Madagascar).

On patrol 4 out of Wilhelmshaven I was given a grid to patrol off of NW Spain. After patrolling my assigned grid and sinking a total of 136,000+ GRT (my personal best) I decided to pull into Cadiz and get resupplied by one of our resupply ships. After that I went down to Freetown and sank a few merchants, not much happening there in early 1940. On my way back to Wilhelmshaven I pulled in to Vigo for resupply and have sunk 30,000+ GRT on this patrol and am now out of torps. I'm currently off Northern Scotland and am heading for home. It feels like I've been away from my home port for months. It'll be good to get home. I let SH3 decide how long I spend in port even though I use SHCommander.

For me patrol length is determined by the patrol grid im assigned to, so it could be a low as 3 weeks up to 1 month in a type VII/C.

Well, I really don't think ridding the men, boat, bunks, clothing and so forth of all the scabies lice and crabs really qualifies as fun and games :rotfl: Ya' need at least a week or two just to cleanse the poor boat (that corpsman's kit in Das boot clearly wasn't going to keep the b*ggers under control, so you know the boat is foul with little human hitch hikers).

I turn the boat towards home the instant I shoot my last eel, but not a minute before. I consider it shameful to pull into port with torpedos remaining.

I will continue the patrol once I'm out of torpedos if by some miracle I hit one of those utterly rare patches of good weather. I will then hang around till the weather turns nasty again.

I always surface cruise at 9 knots so fuel consumption is rarely a problem - I don't have too many patrols where I have to cut it short because of fuel. I have the navigator run reports frequently on fuel burn vs. distance to make sure I've got sufficient reserves.

I always take the time to travel home, reverse the boat all the way into the dock, and listen to the band for a bit before exiting. (I think it was Sailor Steve who first mentioned the best practice of reversing into the slip, and I've copied it ever since.)

Days in port is random, set by SH3 Commander.
