While overpopulation is becoming more of a problem a $5000 baby tax is not a way to go about solving it.

I like the idea. You have to pay to have friggen 15 children families.

If you read the article, the first two are free. This tax is meant to target people that want double digit children. Way to over populate the world. Make those extra children expensive. Farmers creating a certain output of crop should be exempt though.

The last article I read on the subject titled "You wouldn't want to live here" showed that the Earth and Mother Nature can clean up after the wasteful habits of about 2 Billion people. Last I checked, we are headed to 7 billion, and should be at 12 Billion by 2050 unless something is done. The end result is a world stripped of resources, massive starvation, and basically, we almost all die.

This is the real problem in the world today. It is not global warming. The human created portion of Global warming is simply a symptom of over population.

So if you don't like the idea, what is the alternative?

Now the math portion - if each man and woman stabilized at 1.5 children per couple limit, the world would stabilize at guess what? 2 Billion people. So this guys idea of 2 per couple is closely inline with that math. Want more? You have to pay for it.

Looks like a penalty to me overshadowed by calling it "saving the planet"

Hardly - because it is saving the planet. The planet cannot support our current population, so if you plan to increase that population, you must pay a tax.

This is no penalizing normal people that only have a couple children, and I'm sure twins and such would be held exempt. This is simply for people who make poor choices or selffish choices. You can continue to make those choices, but it will cost you.

This should help people make better choices when it costs them out of their pocket book. Besides, do you realize what this would do to the mothers that pump out babies just to get a bigger welfare check?

Thewre are so many problems that would be fixed by a policy like this, or at least help curb out of control issues.

China's mandate is unacceptable, but this is a policy that may work.

Well put Subman and I agree whole heartedly with your assessment of the article. Good show I have two kids and that is all I can afford! I hope they do not start taxing people if they have more than two dogs. Sheesh, the things they leave in the yard......

My Wife and I are planing to have kids in the not too distant future. I hope we don't have to pay for the privilage! We seemed to have paid for everyone else who's had a kid in the area! Maybe they should issue licences for people who wish to have kids. :hmm:

Weren't people crying the same nonsense in the 1950's with the population boom and then gee, we innovated our way out of it with new food production techniques. Of course, we're paying for that with the supply of water, but I'm not worried about that either. The only problems we can't fix or live with just fine are the unexpected ones.

A WEST Australian medical expert wants families to pay a $5000-plus "baby levy" at birth and an annual carbon tax of up to $800 a child.
The guys an idiot.

Fair enough for some over-populated countries but in Australia we are lacking population and Western Australia is a ghost town compared to major world cities.

I heard the other day that California had a larger population than the whole of Australia, Tasmania only has about 440,000 people!

Maybe the USA should send old lady liberty down our way. Bring us your people*, we need them!

*Rich and educated people only. Conditions apply. For a full list of terms please call 1800-immigrant.

My thoughts precisely. I don't know if it's the Australian government, private companies or good samaritans but there's alot of campaigning in the rest of the world to attract immigrants to Australia.

Y'know the general opinion around here is that the Aussies don't like immigrants.

Why would they? They are a penal colony and criminals distrust those who are not the same.

Its funny , theres whats called the Baby Bonus here - have a baby and the goverment gives you a onetime cash payment to help with the raising of the munchkin , Funnily enough the amount this idiot wants parents to pay is virtually the same as the baby bonus:hmm:
With our first kid the cash came in handy to get all the stuff we needed and hadn't bought already , with our latest we had most of the gear from the first one ,but that money really came in handy and made it easier, it's hard enough and expensive enough to rasie munchkins as it is, so for someone to come along and demand we hand over any extra we get is just the height of stupidity.
