UK Russia USA I like the German one best not for nationalistic reasons, but because it is not so martial and warlike like so many others are both in text and music. For the same reason I like the sound of the English one, although in text it is a bit - well, flat, somehow. Here, again the German one has more to offer, I think.   there is one musical piece that often is used for an introduction when something British or "typical" Royal is on TV, it is famous and has a very poetic melody and you all have heared it in your life, I'm sure, but I always forget the title. Reminds a bit of the UK anthem. It is slow, majestic, a slow march I think, but totally non-martial. It was used as title music for this four-parts TV docu on the British royal family, late 80s, TV-title was "Royalty". If you know what I mean, tell me. This piece, in my ears, by its musical sound makes a perfect national anthem. I would place it on 1 if it were an anthem indeed.

The Finland's vocal version is a bit 'heavy'.  But still I choose it (surprise?  ).Tho, if I would've been the one to decide back then, I would've picked the Finlandia for our anthem. I think the French one is cool, very stirring. Russia's is good, as it the States, Australia's is okay too. That makes four, so for number five I'd pick one that technically is not a 'national' anthem, but more a theme tune for socialist and communist states, which is of course, The Internationale, a very stirring tune, whether you are a commie or not.
Unfortunately, I think there are many more naff ones than good ones, and often the semi official, or unofficial ones are better. The (official) British one is commonly known as 'the dirge' by many people, and that's because it is one, awful, definitely amongst the worst, not to mention insulting to Scotland too in one of the versus that is often skipped these days, although of the (several) semi-official other ones, in the case of the UK, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem, are both better than the official one. The one that always makes me laugh though, is the Italian one, which sounds like it is threatening to break into circus music at any second.  Chock
