Default Reflections of a noob

I finally upgraded my computer 2 weeks ago and went and bought SH4 (my old puter would not have worked- 1.5GHZ CPU and ATi 8500). At first I spent a little time on the ubisoft SH4 forum- jeesh, talk about a depressing place. After reading all the ripes, I wondered if I'd enjoy this game.

Then I came here to download a mod- what a breath of fresh air!

Yes, I understand there are problems with the game (haven't personally hit them yet), but people here take a proactive approach.
If it can be fixed- you fix it.
If it can be improved- you improve it.
If someone needs help- you help them without getting snarky. Actually, you're often downright polite.

After installing the major mods, I was blown away by the changes in the game. In fact, I've just run on the surface looking around- never thought a game could bring back memories of running on the surface in real life. Of course, there's no diesel sound on a nuke boat (unless someone/thing scrammed the reactor).

Many thanks to all those who have worked SOOOO hard to bring the mods to this game, and who've taken time to answer questions I would otherwise have asked (usually find my answer with a search).

This is a great group of people with incredible patience and talent- nice to be here.

OK, now that I'm done brown nosing, back to work

That is what gives it the kick that it has . The lint balls are a little distracting though

tater, one of our brilliant modders, wants to change these missions to reflect real life a bit more accurately. Hopefully his labor on this will bear fruit!

BN's have two crews...a Blue and a Gold...
Maximises time that a SSBN can stay underway.

SSBN's and now, SSGN's have 2 crews so they can maximize time on patrol. The boat can stay out and under much longer than the people can w food also being a consideration.

One crew is the Gold crew and the other is the Blue crew. (Navy colors you know)

The old patrol cycle was 70 to 80 days on patrol, bring the boat back and do a turnover for 2-4 days (4 days if you were coming in with a severe problem) and then the new crew had her. They'd do a refit for 21 to 30 (usually 30) days which also included a shakedown cruise and then the boat would go out on patrol with the new crew. The crew on shore was called the "off crew" and would spend the first 4 weeks on a really light schedule and then would spend 8 hours a day 5 days a week in training of various kinds.

There is a new cycle being adopted I haven't read the details on yet- but there you have it, the basic concept behind the terminology.
