Default Came, saw, was impressed, and goodbye

Well, today i decided to get off my lazy butt and go get SH4

It was down to $25 at Compusa. so i figured the lowest it will go is maybe $20, so its time i went and got it.

Installed fine, booted it up and started tweaking with the settings. I must say, graphics wise, this is DAMN good, very very well done. but even with my good old reliable GeForce 6200, its too much for my system. I do only have 1GB of RAM, and no money to double it.

the missions are quite nice, my first patrol involved smuggeling a spy into Japan, far more then i ever got in good old SH3

so until i get rich and buy a super computer, SH4 is going to the same place FSX is, put away and protected from any damage in my DVD/Game case.

oh, and the manuals and documentation are 500x better then SH3 was

So until a better day, I will go back to learning up my German, and watching Das Boot over and over

Don't think you need a super computer to run SH4. I've only got 1024MB of RAM, P4 3.4GHz and until recently only 128MB X700 ATI card and I could run it pretty reasonably, with most of the graphics settings on full. Got the odd bit of slow down but it was still playable.

Just upraded to an Nvidia 8800GTS 320MB card and it runs with no problems at all.

Tell you what, a new card for you computer are very inexpensive now. Upgrade here and you should be able to play the game very well. You can play with 1 gig. I had the 6200 and got an ATI 1300 XGE. Game played very well.

ok then what settings should i turn down? sadly getting anything as far as upgrades is completly out of the question. as much as i try, i cant seem to get any of the places im trying to get a job at to even notice i exist. the only work i have right now is helping my step dad fix up our rental house, and thats not enough to even do much or anything

I have an AMD Athlon 64 2.00 GHz, 1 GB or RAM, and a Geforce 6200 with 256mb of RAM

Ok a little less proccessing power than me but you should be able run it ok.

- First thing I would do is turn off volumetric fog, really slows things down.

- Try running at a lower resolution that might help too.

- move sliders on options such as particle density down maybe only have them at half way. You could always try playing with low res textures on too it removes some of the detail but the game still looks better than SH3.

Off the top of my head those are the things that I think might speed things up. Its difficult to say what would be best as some people will accept a little slow down for better graphics and others are the opposite willing to sacrifice graphics for game play. Perhaps the best course of action may be to turn down all the graphics options to their lowest settings and then turn them up one at a time until you get to a happy compromise. Will take a bit of altering settings then testing etc but you should get there in the end.

Another thing you need to do is to be sure your system is in top notch shape. Do you defrag often? Are your drivers all up to date (BIOS and Chipset are important too)? Yet another thing to do is close down all non essential background applications that hog CPU cycles. A neat little utility for doing this is FS Autostart. A Google search will get you there. Originaly developed for Flight Sims, this program shuts down many programs and services, as well as defrags your memory, and launches the game as well. All services and programs could be set to automaticly restart after exiting the game. I've been useing this for a while, and I could tell you it really helps!

Might want to consider upgrading your reading skills as well :p

The manual is full of incorrect information and 'features' that do not exist. Other aspects of the game are completly overlooked.

'Rumor' has it that several pages were uh.... .lost when it went to press.

But you have a good source of solid factual info here at SubSim.

Sure hope you get your rig up to snuff soon its a very good game. FSX is not bad either but not as big a jump as SH3 to SH4 was graphic wise.

Alot of people are useing the Trigger Maru mod. I think the latest vs. is 1.6. It makes he game more challanging, as well as adds a collection of other mods. You could see exactly what it dose and adds by reading the TM thread in the SH4 Mods Workshop. This is the mod that could be compared to GWX for SH3.

There are some fantastic visual mods out as well. The latest ones being LBO, and ROW. Both these mods make for an absolutely gorgeous, realistic ocean environment. Again, check out the main threads in the Mods Workshop. I must warn you though, these mods could be graphicly intense. Enable them useing the JSGME, this way if they slow your system down too much, you could simply disable them with no harm done.

Starfox, I always recommend you play it vanilla for a bit. Find out what you like and what you do not like. For the things you would like to change search the mod forums for what you are looking to change. Currently I'm using ROW and few texture mods.

Also beware of some mods that modify enviroments such as LBO (living breathing oceans) I tried some of them and it dragged my otherwise acceptable frame rates down to a slide show.

Fortunatly JSGME makes it easy to plug the mods in and 'unplug' them if necessary.
