Default Visciously persistent air attacks

Wow, was on a mission and got attacked constantly not 40 nm from Midway! Eventually had to turn back and go back to Pearl it was so bad.

I guess I wouldn't mind the attacks if they were en-masse or had a greater element of surprise. But the air radar makes it so easy to pick your battles (dealing with planes was MUCH more challenging in SH3) planes in SH4 dont seem that dangerous, just pesky. So far they have pretty lousy aim, so all they really do is chew up my ammo trying to get at least some renown for the hassle.

Does the game mod a carrier actually launching the planes? Having the time compression jump down is really annoying, since crossing the pacific in my Tambor/Gato is like 3,000 nm and the trip is so much longer when I'm constantly getting radar contacts of planes out in the middle of nowhere.

It would be nice if sinking carriers actually had an effect on air attacks out in sea. Or somehow being able to calculate where the carrier was. Does sending contact reports on aircraft do anything?

I have no idea how it is modeled.

But yes there persistant.

Best bet is to run submerged by day and recharge at night.

You also probably want to take a look at some of the mods which alter the air traffic patterns and quantities.

Very true here. Reading the diary of the USS Sculpin, the captain submerged by day to avoid aircraft. This started the day she left port....December 1941, a few days after Pearl Harbor was hit. In fact, reading about it, there was a lot of aircraft friend and foe. Sometimes the friend was a foe do to misidentification. Stay submerged about 100 feet and do the sonar patrol as they did. Aircraft will not bother you.

Unless you were USS Barb, in which case you hauled tail everywhere on the ocean on the surface, running high periscope watch all the way to extend your scan radius. They submerged only when sighted by aircraft. At the end of the war when multiple subs returned with all torpedoes because they were unable to find targets, Barb was busily sinking lots of ships and a railroad train for good measure.

SD radar is your friend. I can't imagine playing without it.

I do tire of the air patrols nearer allied bases. When I do, I run submerged (which weather often forces me to do anyway) for 1-2 days and leave that all behind. I'd rather save my ammo and keep the game more interesting by being more aggressive in the patrol area where shooting and avoiding planes is part and parcal with tracking targets.
