Default activate deck gun targeting system

My deck gun only works on manual. How do I get it to fire at will? How do I get the crew to fire below the water line etc. Is this just something that doesn't work for anyone? Thanks for your help. Peter

First, make sure you have crew members assigned to the deck-gun in the crew management screen.

Then simply click on the deck-gun button in the command bar. You should hear a repeat command "Man the deck-gun, yes, sir."

This brings up other buttons which allow you to command the crew to fire at will etc.

Yes. I have crew manning the deck gun. I can hear the orders being repeated. Fire at will etc. The gun is not firing. Any ideas. I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing. I don't think the AI works the deck gun or the AA gun.

AI works all the guns just fine.
Make sure you have your "Man the Gun" button in the right mode. (The green light mod works great for this!)

My flak gunners take out aircraft with no difficulty most of the time in AI, and I've had to call off the deck gun gunners otherwise they would have spent all the cannon shells needlessly.

Use your binoculars! Look at the target through the binocs. A small icon will appear when you are focused on the target. Hit the spacebar to lock it for the cannon crew. They will begin firing!

Thanks for all the responses! When I use the deck gun station I don't see anything. I just cliked on the AA station and I could see the AA firing and the deck gun also. So I guess it's working properly. How do I get in the binocular view? Just got this game so I'm sure I'm asking stupid questions. I go to the bridge but I don't see any binoculars I can use. Are you talking about the TBT view?

The binocular station is a special mode for the "on the bridge" station, with a different zoom factor. You can switch between the 2 modes by using the mouse wheel or the TAB key. The TAB key (and mouse wheel) works on all stations that support zoomimg: bridge, deck gun, aa gun, navigation map, periscope, TBT.

Or just press B from any station.

Your AA gunner will fire if you tell him too! Click on the interface for inbound targets(aircraft) or fire at will. As for the cannon, man the cannon. Get yourself to the bridge. Press 'B' for the binocular view. Once done, look at the target with the binoculars. A small icon will appear. Press the space bar to lock the gunners on the target you want them to fire at. At this point you can select aim for hull or command deck, etc.
