Is there any document or guide available that details the develpment of japanese radar and sonar technology as implemented in the game? Obviously the jap escorts develop a radar cabability at some point - but the question is when? 1943 sometime?
I've been playing a campaign in '43 and would like to know the exact cabability of the enemy I face. Radar detection ranges, passive sonar detection range / cababilty, radar in ASW aircraft etc Can this data be obtained from the sensors.dat file in any readable way? On a linked topic where in the SH4 directory would I find the .cfg file that determines torpedo data and stuff like failure rate etc? |

each ship has a text .sns file that shows the various sensors.
The type13 radar might still have a problem where it detects ships (and subs), which it should not since it is an air search set. Information on the radars themselves can be found at combinedfleet.com if you are interested. the torpedo files are .sim and .zon files in the Library Directory, and you need to look at them with S3D or something similar. tater |

This is the way I do it and have had no problems yet knowing the range of both U.S. radar & Japanese radar ( U.S. was the better type in those days ).
This pic is in Dec, 1943 so radar would be different earlier in war if any radar at all. Here I have set up where I'm going to set and wait at PD second X ahead of sub which is 1000 yds from first row of Marus. First X is one NM at which I either dive to pd and cut engines ( sometimes you may drift 1/2 nm, depending on speed ) or in this case I stayed on surface to the 1000 yard mark ( which is approx 1/2 nm ). ![]() In this pic my radar has already located this convoy. Click on lead DD and you will have a large circle which is his radar range, don't worry about the others as their radar is all the same according to their position and they never overtake the lead DD...unless your spotted. This shows that U.S radar would scan farther than the Japanese........at that period of time anyway. You can tell your radars distance because ships can be highlighted. These Marus were traveling at 108 degrees of which the protractor lines show, just run mouse wheel to get largest pic of Maru and click on protractor, then set protractor mark dead center on Marus stern and draw through bow. Now you know degree of travel, stretch out this line just past where you are. Unless you are spotted they will stay on this course, or they may change course to a different heading to wherever they are going but not often when their this close to you. Example of using protractor: ![]() You can sit on the surface at 1000 yds ( or wherever you fire from ) watching the large radar circle of lead DD untill it gets within 3 or 4 thousand yards of your sub then calmly sink to PD with motors off, then raise scope and wait some more till they cross your path of fire. Lots of ways of sinking ships but I have pretty good luck doing it this way, course if your one of those 100% people then your on your own. ![]()

yeah unfortunately I play with TM1.5 and 100%, although I do use map contact update - I'm not not that hard core. You method works and I remember it from SH3 but I really do think that radar range data etc should be available within the sim somewhere, like the museum or even the manual even?! It's just one of those things that makes SHIV not quite the high fidelity sim it should/could be.

I miss the pretty colors but I'm having a blast with Trigger Maru. It would be really nice to have a radar range plot just like we already have a circle for visual range and the representation of sonar range as well. Again, that's an appeal to already overworked modders who need some playing time to get their enthusiasm back. And then patch 1.4 will come out to work them to a frazzle again. ![]()

![]() I've always thought the representation of AI sensors on the Nav map are some of the biggest spoliers in the game. Seriously, unless your a japanese engineer and designed those sensors, theres no way you'd have that information in such precise detail. Takes all the guesswork out of the game. |

I agree.
I have read about them assuming a jap ship with radar was nearby by virtue of interference with their own radars, but that would hardly paint a range circle, it's just give a bearing on radar, possibly past the sub's own radar range. tater |
