I've seen on several topics that some people are sending something to comsubpac when they spot an enemy ship. How can you do this? Is it the button next to 'send status report'? I've clicked on that button some times but nothing happens. Do I have to lock the target first? I think it would be very strange because you can only send it surfaced? Can anyone make this more clear to me please?

you're looking at the right button. There are a few things that you have to do in order to trigger it. First, your crew must be completely aware that there is a ship. So someone should have spotted it first. If you are underwater you can obtain a contact via sound but cannot send the message until surfaced.
Next make sure that what you're looking at is a convoy or small task force rather than a single ship. I never call in single ships since airplanes seem to direct themselves to you once you let out a signal.

If they are in sight and there are at least 3 ships... yes.

But if it's a convoy you cant surface because the destroyers will spot you. Or is it that you can see them but they cant see you surfaced?

If you present a small enough cros section, and if you are far enough away and if there are no "Elite" crews you might get away with it. On the other hand you might receive orders to go after the escorts...

One advantage you have is that because you are comparatively low in the water you tend to see them slightly before they can see you. That's the time to send a Contact Report to ComSubPac. Then dive to safety. This assumes that you follow the standard procedure of running on the surface and only diving to attack, or avoid trouble.
before you send a report in of an escorted convoy, check that you have enough torpedoes left to deal with all the escorts. Sometimes you'll report a convoy and be given new orders ( actually a new mission ) to attack the escorts. |

You get renoun for the contact report and don't lose any if you are unable to attack. There's no downside even if you can't comply with the orders (and if you have at least 1 torpedo you can at least try, I don't think they'll tell you to attack with 0).
