Is there an ideal depth for detecting with sonar? I mean in SH4, patch 1.3, without mods, highest realism.
I already know it rarely works at surface (it can work when calm ocean). But are the other depths all equally good? To put it concretely.. are the depths of 50, 100, 300, 400 all equally good? |

Welcome to the Sumsim forums efil. To answer your question, DDs sonar will
work regardless of your depth. Where is won't work most of the time is under the thermal layer. If you can get under it, go silent and keep your bow or stern pointed towards the DD, you have a very good chance of not deing detected..... JIM

I think periscope depth or below all work the same as far as your own sub's hydrophones go.

With patch 1.3 installed (no big mods) you should get hydrophone reads from
your sonar officer either on the surface or at any depth. American subs were able to do this so the Devs applied it to 1.3 JIM

Yall missing what he is asking (well most of you :p )
No there is not 'optimum' depth for your sonar. Even above / below the thermocline seems to make any difference. So anything from periscope on down. Not realistic but thats how it (currently) is. |
