Default What's The Best Kind Of Radio Station For You?

Thanks to the ongoing work of Digital_Trucker and Misfit138 ( power and respect to both) we may soon see an end to the "Save Game bug" which reverts scripted radio stations in a saved game back to the mission start date, rather than the actual in-game save-date.

This means that scripted radio stations, with scheduled broadcasts, will become far more viable.

What would be interesting to know is how people use the radio - e.g. Do you actually manage to listen fully to half-hour programmes such as the Bob Hope Show, Burns & Allen, or Fibber McGee & Molly? Is music the main thing for you? Does anyone play SH IV in a way that allows them to listen to dramas and plays? How important is contemporaneous News? etc etc.

Of course, it all depends on how you play the game and there are probably as many different answers as there are players.

Personally, I don't have hours and hours at a time time to play the game, so TC is important for me - getting to the action / objective as quickly as possible. So, the way I play dictates that my use of the radio is in short ( 3 to 5 - minute "chunks."

What about everyone else?

( if the Moderators will allow, I'll post this on both SH IV forums ) I'm sure the information will be useful to anyone who may be tempted to produce a new radio station mod ( myself included .)

Actually, we now have an end for that "radio reverting in loading a save" bug, thanks to digital_trucker's RadioStation Manager!

I consider myself as a radio junkie. I simply just love that feature and I like to listen those ww2 era songs even thought I more a friend of punkrock but based on my experiences with those many radio addons, I've come in a conclusion that 30 minutes is absolute maximum lenght for any kind of event. This might be a different thing if the sh4 radio would have some kind of "timeout" function so it could dump the previous scripted event when the next one begins

But the content of those events doesn't really matter. News, shows etc. it all goes!

Usually I'll use TC for the music, then when a news or entertainment program starts, drop to normal and then go to the external camera and watch my boat sail while it plays. If the program is loud enough, and the seas aren't too heavy and not making a lot of noise, I'll listen from the bridge instead sometimes.

Because I'm disabled, I do have the hours to play like that. But occasionally even I don't have as much time as I'd like, so then I avoid program heavy stations like my NBC one. And if push really comes to shove, I figure that's what the Gramophone is for.

Like Fred (and for the same reason) I have all the time in the world to listen to the radio while playing. Well, I did until I started writing apps and contantly downloading mods and playing at doing mods (or combining them) with skwasjer's excellent S3D. When I'm playing, I really enjoy listening to the period music and the scripted news and shows.

So, to take an extremely long time to answer a simple question, my answer is "all of the above".:rotfl:

Though I absolutely hate radio commercials in real life, I love them in SH4

Personally I prefer to have short files: say 5 minutes maximum for talkshows/comedy shows. As much as I enjoy listening to Fred Allen or Jack Benny, hearing the same shows gets annoying. I suggest using "edited highlights" for shows that have a lot of talking. Sports games would also be a nice addition, of course here also only the highlights.

As for music, how about using not just the song but also the voice of a presenter introducing it.

Great site, thanks. Is there by any chance a Tokyo Rose mod around? I'd love that!
